General Guidelines for Spanish Tutors

<p>GENERAL GUIDELINES AND INFORMATION FOR SPANISH TUTORS:</p><p>SPANISH 101, 102, 201, 202</p><p>1) CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR. If you are assigned to a specific class (or you are working with several students in the same section), please meet as soon as possible with their instructor.</p><p>2) COURSE MATERIALS. You should be very familiar with the course materials for the beginning and intermediate Spanish courses (SPAN 101-201, and SPAN 202). These include the textbooks on library reserve and online materials, as well as the reference materials in the CTL (dictionaries, thesaurus, etc.). If you need access to restricted online materials, please ask the course instructor.</p><p>3) HONOR CODE. Always abide by the LU Honor Code, even for homework assignments. </p><p> QUIZZES/TESTS. Instructors will provide review and practice material if needed. You should not assist students who bring copies of actual quizzes or tests. Illicitly storing (and using) testing materials without permission is a violation of the Lawrence University Honor Code, and it should be reported as such. </p><p> HOMEWORK. You may not help students with Panorama WebSAM assignments. They are a graded component of the SPAN 101-201 classes, so you should not supply answers or translations. o For reading comprehension exercises, help the students focus on the context, titles, visual clues and cognates. o For grammar and vocabulary exercises, guide the students to the appropriate grammar rules and vocabulary choices instead of doing their homework for them.</p><p> WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS. See specific guidelines on the second handout.</p><p>4) ORAL EXAMS: These will take place near the end of each term. Course instructors will provide detailed format information and practice suggestions for each section.</p><p>SPANISH 300 AND ABOVE</p><p>PRESENTATIONS AND ESSAYS</p><p> CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR to find out about the details of each assignment.</p><p> PRODUCING IDEAS. You may help students produce and shape ideas for their presentations or essays by acting as a soundboard. You may use your knowledge of the subject matter to guide the student, but you should not provide specific content for their assignment.</p><p> RESEARCH. Always refer students to the course instructor and reference librarians for an evaluation of research materials and resources, as well as for specific rules regarding citation and format guidelines.</p><p> EDITING drafts, scripts, handouts and Powerpoint slides. (Please follow the guidelines on the second handout).</p>
