Characterisation factors used in the case study

This case study used characterisation factors (CF) for land use impacts derived from a variety of methods developed in the context of the UNEP SETAC Life Cycle Initiative (de Baan et al. 2011; Müller-Wenk and Brandão 2010; Brandão and Milà i Canals 2011; Saad and Margni 2011). Some additional CF were calculated or adapted specifically for the case study. For convenience, all the CF used in the case study are collated in the spreadsheet below:

Margarine case study.xls

SI.2. Quantification of land use change related to oil crops

As explained in section 2.2.1 of the main text, FAOSTAT (2011b; 2011c) data were used to estimate the transformation flows associated with the different crops in the relevant countries. The data used are all included in the spreadsheet below. Data for Step 1 (as explained in section 2.2.1) are detailed for each crop in the tabs named after each crop (Sunflower; linseed; etc.). For those crops where Steps 2 and 3 (see section 2.2.1) were required, the data to perform those steps are shown in the last tab of the spreadsheet (Statistical Data).

LUC Estimation Margarine

References de Baan L, Alkemade R, Koellner T (2012): Land use impacts on biodiversity in LCA: a global approach.
