PUNJAB SALE (16 MAR 16) Wed, 16th Mar 2016 Lot 230 Estimate: £1500 - £1800 + Fees INDIA & PAKISTAN – Photograph Album of Tirah Expeditionary Force & Saragarhi A most scarce large format photograph album of the Torah Expeditionary Force 1897-98, taken by the Bombay Sappers & miner, containing 54 photographs including 8 panoramic photographs of this mountainous region. The Tirah campaign included the North- West Frontier's most famous battle which took place at Saragarhi post. The album contains rare photography of the Interior of Saragarhi Post, Fort Lockhart, Fort Cavagnari from Saragarhi, Khanki Vallet and river, View of Arhunga Pass taken during battle, Arhunga post looking over Afridi Tirah, Flags captured from SAiyad Akbar by the Sikhs, Sikhs standing in courtyard of Saiyad Akbars Musjid, Piquest of 3rd Gurkhas, Jamrod Fort, Khyber Pass from Jamrod, Alia Masji Khyber Pass, Landikotal, etc, every photograph is captioned on the mount. Bound in original dark green leather album, with gilt title, worn on edges. An excellent record of this exhaustive campaign which saw one of history’s most memorable last stands. Album measures 48cms x 30cms. Saragarhi was a military post between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan, The Battle of Saragarhi was fought during the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikhs of the 4th Battalion (then 36th Sikhs) of the Sikh Regiment of British India, defending an army post, and 10,000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesmen. The battle occurred in the North-West Frontier Province, now named the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and is part of Pakistan. The contingent of the twenty-one Sikhs from the 36th Sikhs was led by Havildar Ishar Singh. They all chose to fight to the death.
