<p> CATCHERS COMMUNICATION As a catcher in the State Program you will be expected to take charge of the defence in game situation. You will be expected to be vocal and be confident when doing so. Below you will find a list of verbal indicators you are required to give to our defence in certain situations.</p><p> When a Left Hand Hitter comes to the plate, remind the pitcher to cover 1B on a ground ball hit to the right side. “Ground ball right side, cover 1st base”. Anytime the ball is hit to the right side you must say, “GET OVER….GET OVER”. Project your voice.  With a Runner at 2B or 3B with less than two out, remind the pitcher to, “Check the Runner on a comebacker”.  In a double play situation, remind the Pitcher, “Know who you are working with on a double play”  Two out and a runner on 2B, remind the Infielders, “On your bellies/knock it down. Nothing gets through the infield”.  In a bunt situation, remind the infield, “Be aware of the bunt”  1st and 3rd. “Be alive/heads up infield” to grab all infielders attention before commencing with signs.  With an average Runner at 1B or in a 1st and 3rd situation, remind the Infielders, “BE AWARE OF THE DELAYED STEAL”.  With bases loaded and full count, remind the Infielders, “Hold your ground, runners in motion”  If a Pitcher throws three consecutive balls, you the catcher are to call time and have a chat. Example- “Just concentrate on the glove now, throw it to me low in the zone”.  If a pitcher “crosses you up” go and visit the mound, make sure it is sorted before the next pitch.  Before the game make sure the Pitcher is OK with the 5 series- (pick off signs)  Before taking the field, make sure the Pitcher is aware of what signs and indicators you will be using especially with a Runner at 2B.  With a good hitter approaching the plate and a Runner at 2B with 1B open, go talk to the Pitcher and make sure you both agree on how to work the Hitter.  GOOD, LOUD AND CLEAR communication on all bunt plays. Call the base to throw to, twice clearly, relaxed and early. Example- “ One, One”.  On the ball hit into the outfield you are to direct the defence regarding the base at which the play will be made Eg – Three! Three! </p>
