Informal Meeting of Eu Water Directors in Portugal

MINISTÉRIO DO AMBIENTE, DO ORDENAMENTO DO TERRITÓRIO E DO DESENVOLVIMENTO REGIONAL

INFORMAL MEETING OF EU WATER DIRECTORS IN PORTUGAL Practical Information

29-30 November, 2007

PAVILHÃO ATLÂNTICO, PARQUE DAS NAÇÕES LISBON

The Parque das Nações urban development project covers 340 hectares, including 5 km of river front property on the Tagus River estuary, a nature reserve considered to be one of the ten most important wetlands in Europe for sea birds. The Parque das Nações includes 60 ha encompassing the Olivais Dock - a 1940's airport for hydroplanes, and site of the 1998 World Exposition. The development's first phase laid the foundations: designed as a public space and hosting EXPO'98, it is a self-contained urban whole, with residential quarters, stores, services, urban LOCATION infrastructure, parking facilities and parks. The urban "concept" called for re-establishing the link between City and River. Environment and landscape were to be restored, usefulness rediscovered. The development was to be woven into the city's fabric and contribute to defining the city as a whole, while becoming a new pole of attraction in its own right within the greater Lisbon area. EXPO'98 was more than just a chance for improving the environment and urban renewal. It was an opportunity to both modernize and internationalize Lisbon. Atlantic Pavilion - Located at the heart of Parque das Nações benefits from a privileged location. Good accessibilities derived from the big road axis from eastern Lisbon, as CRIL, Vasco da Gama Bridge and CONFERENCE North-South axis, and modern and excellent infrastructures, as River CENTRE Terminal, Oriente Station, an interface of transport networks such as urban buses, Underground, CP-trains, Taxis and buses as well as 5 minutes direct link to Lisbon International Airport. The Hotel Olissippo Oriente and the Hotel Tryp Oriente, opened since the Lisbon World Exhibition are excellent choices for lodging due to HOTELS their privileged location - in Parque das Nações next to the Oriente Station and the Vasco da Gama Centre. While other parts of Europe become wet and dreary in November, much of Portugal enjoys the unusually warm and sunny weather FURTHER referred to as St. Martin's summer. Let’s hope so!
