Mapping: Culminating Assignment

CGC1P

Mapping: Culminating Assignment

This project is to be completed in groups of 2 or 3.

Your task is to design either a: golf course; motocross track; ski hill; triathlon course; mountain bike course. The next page will give you some guidelines for each.

Part 1: The Map You must create a topographic map of your design, which must include the following elements: - Title - Legend - Scale (in ratio form) - Direction (compass rose) - Use of colour

Part 2: The Model You must also create a 3D model of your design. It should match up well with your topographic map, and have as much detail as you can. Paint, trees, and other 3D elements should be included.

There are many tutorials online to help you with a paper mache type design. Here are some links: Creating a terrain model: http://www.ehow.com/how_5828560_make-topographic-map-school-project.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kQ2UAkmxZE Paper Mache recipes: Flour-based recipe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaLmdRBvGG4 Glue-based recipe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Uas0CAIal4

Part 3: The Presentation You must also include some sort of justification for your proposed design. This justification can take the form of a poster, a written report, or a presentation (presentations do not need to be done in front of the class), and should be created as if it were being shown to potential investors that you are trying to convince to develop the area that you have chosen. You will explain your design, and why it will be an excellent course/track/hill/whatever.

Evaluation: A detailed rubric will follow. You will be evaluated based on the following, as well as your overall contribution to the group. Application (proper map that contains all required elements, model is a well executed representation of the map and contains all required elements) Communication (Organization, neatness, spelling/grammar or presentation skills) Thinking & Inquiry (design is creative, well thought-out and well justified) CGC1P

Triathlon Course  Race Length: 1 km swim, 40 km bike route, 10 km run route  The bike and run routes must be paved and should have varied elevation  Large, open flat areas for: parking, transition zones, spectators  Large finish area for: medical (portable) facilities, awards presentations, post race stretching, food and drinks  Accessibility by road is necessary

Golf Course  9 holes: two par 3s, five par 4s, and two par 5s  Total distance must be between 2500 and 3000 meters  Include a Clubhouse and a Maintenance facility  Must be near a river or lake (for maintenance purposes)  The river or lake must be integrated into the course design  Road access  Elevation changes should provide interesting, but not impossible play

Motocross Track  The track should be between 400m and 600m long  At least 3 jumps, one of which should be a table-top  A section of whoops or stutters  At least half of the corners should be banked  At least one hill (a climb and a descent that is not a jump)  Some sort of staging area to work on bikes, provide food/washrooms and medical attention

Ski Resort  Hill should be between 100m and 500m vertical elevation  At least 5 runs  At least 1 lift  At least 2 easy, 2 medium, and 1 difficult run  The more difficult the run, the steeper the slope  A lodge at the base of the hill  Water for snowmaking must be available  Road access

Mountain Bike Course  Located on a hill at least 75m high  A circuit about 1 km in length  Use the entire elevation of the hill (from top to bottom)  The climbs should not be too steep, but some of the descents can be  Include rocks/logs/and other obstacles  Some sort of staging area to work on bikes, provide food/washrooms and medical attention
