Use this guide to categorize the questions on the handout by type and then to write questions of your own. </p><p>WORLD CONNECTION QUESTIONS: These questions connect the text to the real world.  What characteristics do you look for in a leader?  How would you go about making a chaotic situation civil?  What present world events are similar to the chaotic situation the boys experience on the island?</p><p>CLOSE-ENDED QUESTIONS: These questions about the text will help everyone in the class come to an agreement about events or characters in the text. These questions usually have a "correct" answer.  What is the purpose of the conch?  How do the boys know there is no civilization on the island?  What animal does Jack almost kill in the first chapter? </p><p>OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS: These insightful questions about the text will require proof, insights, and group discussion to discover or explore the answer to the question.  After reading the first three chapters, has Ralph proven to be a good leader? Why/why not?  After reading the first three chapters, how would you describe Ralph and Piggy's relationship? </p><p>UNIVERSAL THEME / CORE QUESTIONS: These questions deal with a theme(s) of the text that will encourage group discussion about the universality of the text.  Why are rules important in a society?  How does a leader maintain his/her position of authority? </p><p>LITERARY ANALYSIS QUESTIONS: These questions deal with the author’s style. Your question may focus on how the author manipulates point of view, characterization, syntax, diction, or archetypal patterns.  Why do you think Golding made Piggy a fat boy?  Why do you think Golding chose an island for the setting?  Why do you think Golding chose to write in Third Person Omniscient, rather than Third Person Limited or First Person?
