MRC SUPREMO a Phase III Randomised Trial to Assess the Role of Adjuvant Chest Wall Irradiation

Dear Colleagues,

MRC SUPREMO – a Phase III randomised trial to assess the role of adjuvant chest wall irradiation in intermediate risk breast cancer after mastectomy.

SUPREMO welcomes the Olympics to London. In line with this occasion we are also celebrating the highest recruiting month the trial has seen this year with a total of 36 patients recruited in July. This is a fantastic accomplishment, well done to all centre’s who entered patients last month. Please keep up this hard work as we approach the finish line to recruitment.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our top recruiting sites.

Dr Loncaster and colleagues at The Christie Hospital, Manchester (59 pts)

Dr Hatton and colleagues at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield (53 pts)

Dr Westenberg and colleagues at Arnhems Radiotherapeutisch Instituut (49 pts)

Quality of Life and Health Economics sub-study As detailed in a previous edition we have recently received approvals to continue recruitment into the QoL sub-study past the initial accrual target. We have now attached the MREC approval for this non-substantial amendment. Please forward a copy of this to your local R&D office for their information.

Please could you ensure that any patients taking part in the HE sub-study complete their patient diaries based on any visits to a health professional after the completion of any post-operative chemotherapy (if received) or after the patient’s last definitive surgery (in those patients not receiving post-operative chemotherapy). We have had a few cases where patients have completed their diaries retrospectively including visits to a health professional which occurred prior to these dates.

If you have any questions relating to the HE or Quality of Life sub-study please can you direct them to Linda Williams ([email protected]) or Susan Hermiston ([email protected]) who will both be available to answer these queries.

The SUPREMO team would like to welcome the following new sites who recently completed all the necessary approvals to open to recruitment:

 Dr Chaudhuri & colleagues at Lincoln County Hospital, UK.  Associate Professor Christie & Colleagues at Premion Centres in Tugun, Southport, Wesley, Chermside & Nambour, Australia.

We look forward to randomising the 1st patient from these sites.

In addition we would like to congratulate the research teams at the following sites for randomising their first subject(s) to the trial in July:  Dr Julia Hall and site staff at Kent and Canterbury Hospital  Dr Bishop and colleagues at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre – Bendigo, Australia

Thanks are also due to the research teams at the following centres who have randomised patients to SUPREMO in July [patients in July / total patients recruited to date by site]:

Dr Jackie Clarke, Belfast City Hospital (3/39) Dr Charles Lowdell, Charing Cross Hospital (3/23) Dr Pamela Woodings, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (2/33) Dr Blanca Farrus, Clinico Y Provincial De Barcelona (2/24) Dr Sunil Upadhyay, Castle Hill Hospital Hull (2/23) Dr Mathew Hatton, Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield (1/53) Dr Nicola Russell, Antoni Van Leeuwenhoekziekenhuis (1/46) Dr Adrian Harnett, Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (1/32) Dr Chris Cottrill, Barts Health NHS Trust (1/31) Dr Lisa Barraclough, Macclesfield District General Hospital (1/27) Dr Martin Rolles, Singleton Hospital, Swansea (1/21) Dr Neil Bayman, Wigan Royal Albert Edward Infirmary (1/20) Dr Anne Robinson, Southend Hospital (1/17) Dr Elzbieta Senkus-Konefka, Medical University of Gdansk (1/16) Dr Mohini Varughese, Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (1/15) Dr Mary Quigley, Barking, Havering & Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust (1/15) Dr Douglas Adamson, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee (1/13) Dr Fuh Yong Wong, National Cancer Centre Singapore (1/13) Dr Carla Rodenhuis, UMC Utrecht (1/13) Dr M Stenfert-Kroese, Stedendriehoek en Omstreken (1/11) Dr Peter Barrett-Lee, Velindre Cancer Centre (1/11) Dr JJ Jager, Maastro (1/10) Dr Geoffrey Sparrow, Yeovil Hospital (1/9) Dr Nicola Storey, University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool (1/8) Dr Diana Ritchie, Victoria ACH, Glasgow (1/5) Dr Sri Kumar, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (1/3) Dr Marjorie Tomlinson, Weston General Hospital, Weston-Super-Mare (1/3) Dr Julia Hall, Kent and Canterbury Hospital (1/1) Dr Michelle Bishop, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre – Bendigo (1/1)

188 patients have been recruited into SUPREMO in 2012 so far.
