Once Again Post 16 Students Are Timetabled for Leadership Lessons. Throughout Term 1 And

Once again Post 16 students are timetabled for leadership lessons. Throughout Term 1 and 2 the sports leaders have been working hard on developing skills necessary to lead a PE lesson, with a focus on: loud voices, confidence, clear instructions, praise, where to stand and how to support each other. With plenty of practice the leaders have been able to fine tune their skills to have the confidence to lead two sessions with pupils from Year 4 Heron’s Moor.

The leaders learnt how a PE lesson is split into three parts: the warm-up, main activity and cool down, they selected which element they wanted to lead and what activity to include. After a quick introduction to Heron’s Moor pupils Lewis can be seen leading the warm-up: Stuck in the mud, run around, when you are caught stand with arms out, until released by someone running under your arms. This was followed by the Main Activity a number of relay games, Pete introduced the first race, throwing and catching the ball. Jessica can be seen supporting a team with equipment and then leading a different race. Lewis was quick to invent numerous games and had the confidence to lead them with clear explanations.

The main activity continued with parachute games, Pete can be seen confidently leading Cat and Mouse. Their loud voices and clear instructions were great to hear and all the pupils enjoyed the games. The cool down was led by Jessica asking pupils to lie down listen to the music, tense and then relax their bodies; Lewis was in control of the Music.

Leadership provides opportunities for pupils to develop lifelong skills, in confidence, self esteem, to take control of a given task, to believe in themselves and their ability to convey information to younger pupils. The skills learnt are also transferable to work being learnt at College. The link between the two schools is enhanced through such work and enables pupils at Heron’s Moor to appreciate the skills that pupils at Baytree have. The next challenge for the leaders will be to work with the whole class and lead some relay races. Many thanks to Mrs Smith for supporting the work with her class. Jane Hawkes Feb 2014
