ELL Strategies: I can generate questions about text (e.g., factual, Pre-teach vocabulary inferential, evaluative).</p><p>Before Reading Vocabulary: astronomers, collided, orbiting, debris, rotation</p><p>Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: “Today students we will be reading a book about the moon. We will be using the comprehension strategy of questioning to help us learn and/or validate a current understanding we have about the moon. Questioning is a strategy that good readers use. We want to ask questions before we read, while we are reading and encounter new information, and after we read. Take a few minutes and record on your KNQ what you already know about the moon..” “I’m going to read the first page aloud to you,” (Teacher reads the first page aloud and stops to model the questioning strategy). “One question that comes to my mind as I was reading this page, is, ‘How, or what makes the moonshine?’ I will look for an answer to this question as I continue reading. While you are reading today, I want you to pay attention to what questions come to your mind as you are reading, and see if you can find answers to those questions.”</p><p>Comprehension Strategy: Questioning During Reading Students should be reading and consciously paying attention to questions generated by the text. Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading “Now that we have read and learned some things about the moon, I would like you to each share a questions that came to your mind as you were reading.” As students share questions, ask whether or not the question was answered somewhere in the text. If the question was answered, record, the new information in the N column of the KNO. Students return to desks to complete the organizer independently. St., Math, etc.) Assessment: Collect the KNQs to assess if Activities: Have the students create a story about the students met the above objectives the shapes and shadows they see on the moon that night.</p><p>*Not all activities will be done in each lesson.
