Year 8

START.

00.00 - 00.15 - Introduction. Warm up. Word association games. - Read the poem ’Dear Tina’ to the class. - Note how it uses imagery to conjure the world of the poem.

00.15 - 00.30 - Read: The Puerto Rican girls of French Hill & The Afro/Caribbean boys of South East. - The poems works on identity and cultural stereotypes. There is nothing wrong with Stereotypes, a lot of the time they are true, the only problem is they present just ONE side of a person and we are made of a cacophony, a kaleidoscope of thoughts feelings, experiences.

- There are 3 turning points in these poems. - Point 1) Puerto Rico ‘Shine’ and Afro ‘blaze’. These are celebratory lines and open the poem to a list of objects and colors that are associated with the people.

- Point 2) ‘They walk a walk’ – Here, we see the subject matter in motion, doing what they do.

- Point 3) They hang at night at street corners’ – The subject matter is at rest in a ‘natural environment’ and they address figures of power.

The brilliant thing about the structure of the poem is that you can write about ANY group of people from any subculture. Here is a list of possible titles:

The Potato farmers of West Yorkshire, The Postmen of Isle of Wight, The Skateboarders of Western Street, The Baker family of Cotton Hill, The NetBall Team of Cromer High, The Breakdancers, The Indie bands of The Eighties, The Pudgy Politicians of Parliament Square, The hair stylists of Oxford Street, The Tailors of Saville Row.

00.30 - 00.35 - You can be celebratory or critical of them, so divide your poem into the three sections, think of a group of people, decide if will you celebrate or criticize? // Lets go!

00.35 - 00.50 Writing

00.50 - 00.60 Share the poem with the class.

END. ______S E A N T H O M A S D O U G H E R T Y ( b . 1 9 6 5 )

T H E P U E R T O R I C A N G I R L S O F F R E N C H H I L L

The Puerto Rican girls of French Hill shine like saints like frescoes from cathedrals freshly painted Cadillacs & chrome plated silver dollars melted gold & emerald crowns of Incan Mayan Afro Spanish grace they walk a walk so thick with slang a machete could not slice away the Samba in their hips that sway to Latin Beats through city streets they shout at night at passing cars & point at streetlight matadors & say don’t play like you’re the man you ain’t. ______I N U A M U H A M M E D E L L A M S ( b . 1 9 8 4 )

T H E A F R O / C A R R I B B E A N B O Y S O F S O U T H L O N D O N

- after Sean Thomas Dougherty

The Afro/Caribbean boys of South London blaze like paint like graffiti from billboards freshly sprayed Air Force Ones & shadow shaded tracksuits loose hoodies & dark hats of New-Era Nike, Adidas grace they walk a walk so bad with slang handcuffs could not break the broad in their shoulders that bounce to grime beats through city streets they hang at night at corners & swear at the thugs in blue & say don’t walk like you run this shit you don’t.
