Intermolecular Forces Jigsaw Activity

Gt Chemistry Unit: Chemical Bonding Name: ______Date: ______MOD: ______

INTERMOLECULAR FORCES JIGSAW ACTIVITY

Introduction: The chemical bonding types that we have discussed (ionic, covalent, and metallic) are intramolecular forces or forces within molecules. There is another class of forces known as intermolecular forces which exist between different molecules. While these intermolecular forces are much weaker than chemical bonds, they have a significant impact on the physical properties of molecules. The main categories of intermolecular forces are hydrogen bonding, dispersion forces, dipole-dipole forces, and ion-dipole forces.

Directions: You will be working in a home group consisting of four students. Each student will also be assigned to an expert group. You will have 15 minutes to meet in your expert group to gather information about your particular force and then 30 minutes to work with your home group to develop a poster (paper or electronic) comparing the four intermolecular forces.

Force ______

Description

Sketch

Types of Molecules

Relative Strength

Effect on Properties

Real Life Example Gt Chemistry Unit: Chemical Bonding Other Important Facts
