Sports Marketing Bio -- Kara Mulder

I would describe myself as somewhat of a perfectionist with a competitive spirit.

I think these characteristics help explain why I have naturally gravitated to athletic activities.

In elementary school I was a gymnast. My athletic interests turned to volleyball once I reached high school, and up until this past year, volleyball is where I have spent most of my athletic focus. I played three seasons of college volleyball on the women’s volleyball team at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska.

During high school, I played on the women’s basketball team, women’s flag football team, and women’s slow-pitch softball team. My athletic hobbies have also included surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding, weight lifting, cycling, and running, and tennis.

My most recent passion is tennis. I played recreationally in high school, but never had formal training until little less than a year ago. I began taking private lessons, and I improved very quickly. I am now at the level of a Division 3 tennis player, and I only wish that CSUB was in a lower division.

Due to my interest in weight lifting that developed my freshman year of college, I became a Personal Trainer. Most recently I worked at a YMCA in Lincoln, Nebraska. I also have had internships with a wellness company that specializes in natural approaches to health, and at various gyms.

Most notably, I worked with a local Pilates instructor who owns a small studio.

She is now expanding, and has asked me to work with her in her business. I am very excited about this opportunity, and I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge in this area of fitness.

I will finish my undergraduate degree in business upon completion of this class.

My emphasis is marketing. I am uncertain about the exact direction I will take with my degree. I know for certain that I must work in a fitness or wellness related field. I have dreamed of working for Nike, but I am not sure that I would like the corporate world. I have also dreamed of starting my own business. I have also thought about graduate school, but do not know if I should pursue a business sports management degree or kinesiology degree. I am really looking forward to this quarter because I think it will give me a clear idea of what fits me best and what dream I should pursue.
