<p> Flower Dissection</p><p>Purpose: To examine and identify the parts of a flower.</p><p>Procedure:</p><p>Petals and Sepals--Carefully observe the entire flower. This flower is in the lily family. A lily has sepals that resemble their petals. Using the forceps peel off a sepal and a petal and tape them down in your spiral. Label with the name and number of each and record their functions.</p><p>Stamen--Locate the stamens and carefully remove them from the flower using the forceps. Examine one of the stamen with the magnifying glass. Tape one down in your spiral. Label the parts of the stamen and record their functions. Is this the male or female part of the plant? Label the plant part with your answer.</p><p>Pollen--Shake off some pollen from one of the stamen and tape it down in your spiral. Look at the magnified picture of pollen on the Starboard. Draw a picture of the magnified pollen in your spiral and label it. What cells do pollen contain? Write this down in the pollen section of your spiral.</p><p>Pistil--Locate the pistil and carefully remove all other flower parts off of using the forceps. Make a drawing of the pistil and label it. Label the stigma, style and ovary and record their functions. Is this the male or female part of the plant? Label the picture with your answer. </p><p>Ovary—split the pistil lengthwise to see the ovary. The structures inside the ovary are the ovules. Use a magnifying lens to observe the ovules up close. Draw the internal parts of the ovary and label. What cells do the ovules contain? Record this next to your drawing.</p><p>Apple--Observe the cut apple that I have at the front of the classroom.</p><p>Record the following answers in your spiral:</p><p>What part of the flower develops into the seed once fertilized?</p><p>What part of the flower develops into the fruit once fertilized?</p>
