May 29, 2005 the Body and Blood of Christ

Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ

Call to prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, in this most wonderful sacrament, you left us a memorial of your passion, death, and resurrection; help us to celebrate your life among us in the Eucharist with great joy and deep love. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 6:51-58

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.

"Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever."

The Gospel of the Lord

Focus: When we receive the Eucharist, we are united to Jesus and the Father. We share God’s life. When we share Christ’s life we are already living eternally.

Questions for reflection and sharing: 1. What words or phrases stand out for you in this gospel?

2. Can you recall a celebration of the Mass that meant a lot to you?

3. What is the stewardship message in this gospel?

4. Christ gave us fullness of life. Describe what fullness of life is for you.

Concluding Prayer: With faithful love and unfailing care, Lord God, you nurture and nourish your people on our pilgrimage through the wilderness of this world. Satisfy our deepest hunger for you with the Eucharistic feast of your body and blood that our life’s journey may lead us safely to your heavenly banquet. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
