Ecooambassador Grant: Food Scaping a Tribal College

EcooAmbassador Grant: Food Scaping a Tribal College

Survey Results

Question: The location of the nut and berry food forest model has been methodically chosen to be located near the Coast Salish Garden on the south campus. This will enable us to use the old growth of the Coast Salish Garden and also the new growth of the surrounding grassy area. What are your thoughts about this selected area?

Feedback: One person left a comment mentioning our fruit and nut garden should be behind the church where the preexisting apple trees are located.

Question: If you had the opportunity to help install the nut and berry food forest in the upcoming quarters, would you be interested in helping?

Feedback: Time, physical abilities, and extended campus location will limit the ability of some to participate as desired. Some people are worried that the plants will be removed by campus maintenance and work will be wasted. Question: Other than nuts and berries what types of native plants would you choose to include? (Select all that apply and identify specific types, where possible.)

Feedback: Very specific edible plants were requested: Kale, Potatoes, Walla Walla Onions, Jerusalem Artichokes, and Wild Onions. One request was made for Cat Tail, Nettle, Bear Grass, etc. for basket weaving. The last specific request was for native herbs and flowers used traditionally.

Question: Would you be interested in maintaining and harvesting the garden?

Feedback: Similar to the feedback from question two-limited physical abilities, time constraints, and location constraints. Although, one person mentioned adding this location to the weekly ISL Garden Parties.

Question: If the edible landscape was designed to include benches, study areas, and/or pavilions would you be more inclined to utilize the space?

Feedback: One person believes gardens are meant to be directly enjoyed as an escape from daily chaos. Another person was very against this idea saying it would turn the area into another smoking area.
