Course Description and Goals This course is designed to familiarize the MAT instrumental music students with the basic pedagogical and acoustical aspects of woodwind, brass, percussion and string instruments. Practical experience as both teacher and student will enhance learning, leaving students with a solid foundation for teaching in both public and private schools. Current education trends and strategies will be introduced to enable future music teachers to link music education with California teaching standards.</p><p>II. Meeting Schedule Tuesday and Thursdays, 10:00 am – 11:50 am August: Pre-class Observation Week, M-F, Aug 15 – 19, 8:00am – 3:00pm, Getting Started Work with Jordan Middle School students. Assist Dr. Whitener in developing classroom expectations, selecting and assigning instruments and teaching basic tone production. Week #1 23, Tuesday 25, Thursday General Principles of Woodwind, Brass and String Instruments. Band Instrument Transposition ***The Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) will hold the Fall Conference at the Orange County Hilton on Saturday, August 27. Attendance at this event will be in lieu of the regular class meeting on Thursday, September 1. School administrators will be seeking future educators at many of our course venues, these could be an initial connections with your prospective employers. We will only be able to recommend teacher candidates who consistently demonstrate the highest level of attendance, promptness and responsibility.</p><p>Late assignments will be penalized with a 10% reduction for each day past the due date, unless you have made prior arrangements with me.</p><p>If you are unable to attend a class meeting, please contact me at (818) 414-0904 {my cell phone) prior to the class time. Please arrange for a classmate to ensure that you have class notes and handouts from the day you miss class. Handouts and class notes will be an essential part of your notebook for the course.</p><p>It is expected that all MAT students will spend a significant amount of time working with the Jordan Middle School Bands (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels). </p><p>STATEMENT FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student requesting academic accommodations based on a disability is required to register with Disability Services and Programs (DSP) each semester. A letter of verification for approved accommodations can be Page 2 obtained from DSP. Please be sure the letter is delivered to me as early in the semester as possible.
