Core Components of Energy Control Program

Bloodborne Pathogens Safety Training Handout

 Why we practice bloodborne pathogen safety

 Working with blood and other body fluids can put employees at risk for catching infectious – and possibly deadly – diseases. Although your job does not have you working around bodily fluids basic awareness is still vital.

 Employees that have received training on BBP cleanup are the ONLY ones allowed to clean a bodily fluid spill using the appropriate cleanup kits and PPE.

 HBV – this is a vaccination to hepatitis B and you are strongly recommended to accept free vaccination from the company if offered (offered to employees whose work exposes them to potential BBPs). HCV - Hepatitis C & HIV (the virus that can cause AIDS) have NO vaccination and there is NO cure.

 OSHA requires companies that place workers in situations where they could be exposed to infectious fluids to institute safety measures to protect employees.

 Hepatitis B virus is largely preventable through vaccination. There are no vaccinations for HCV and HIV, however, so preventing occupational exposures to blood can prevent occupational infections. This includes using appropriate barriers (PPE) which in our industry includes wearing gloves when cleaning rest rooms and never cleaning a BBP without proper training and PPEs, and never reaching into a trash can as needle sticks are a real danger.

 Your response if you're exposed to infectious fluids

 If you’re accidentally exposed to potentially infectious materials while working, wash your hands immediately using antibacterial soap or disinfectant and running water.

 If fluid was splashed in your eye or another mucous membrane, flush that area with running water for 15 minutes or longer.

 Report the incident to your supervisor right away.

 Seek professional medical attention immediately.

 Consider accepting your employer's offer for a Hepatitis B vaccination at no cost.

 Have a medical evaluation done, including lab tests at no cost.

GDI Services
