Speedball Study Guide

Speedball Study Guide “Speedball” is a combination of soccer, basketball and football.

Nature of the Game: The game of speedball is played on an outdoor area the size of a soccer field. The ball is advanced by using a kick-off from mid-field and can be moved down the field by dribbling with the feet as in soccer or by passing from player to player as in basketball.

Team: An official team consists of 11 players: 5 forwards (in charge of scoring, offensive), 3 halfbacks (plays both, offense & defense), 2 fullbacks (defensive, helps the goalie), and a goalie (defensive).

The defensive team should guard opponents as they would in basketball, using either a person to person defense or a zone defense (in class we will use a person to person defense).

The ball is put into play with a kick-off at the center of the field and all members of the kicking team must be behind the ball when it is kicked forward. The ball must travel the circumference before it may be recovered by the offense. When a team causes the ball to go out of bounds on the sidelines, the opponents put the ball into play by a two hand overhead pass (throw-in).

Scoring 5 points = Field Goal (Drop Kick):The ball must contact the ground before contacting it & be kicked over the cross bar through the uprights (goal post). 3 points = Soccer Goal: A ground ball kicked under the cross bar and between the uprights (goal post). 2 points = Touchdown: The ball is passed (hands) in the air from the field of play to a teammate in the end zone, who than catches the ball. 1 point = Endline Goal: A ground ball that is kicked over the end line.

*After a score is made, a kickoff occurs by the scoring team.

Playing Restrictions Personal Fouls: kicking, tripping, charging, pushing, holding (unnecessary roughness) Penalty: A free kick is awarded.

Violations: carrying the ball, touching a ground ball with hands or arms, violating kick-off rules, returning the ball from out of bounds incorrectly. Penalty: Opponents are awarded the ball at the point of the violation. Terms Conversion - raising the ball off the ground and into the hands without just picking it up off of the ground. Changing a ground ball into an aerial ball.

Traveling - taking steps while holding onto the ball.

Pivot - a player with the ball keeps one foot planted and may move in any direction.
