CAUL has statistical data back to 1953, and New Zealand data has been included since 1974. While many of the data elements have remained the same, some have been added or removed as the environment has changed. 2. One of the most obvious changes has been the transition from heavily print-based collections to predominantly electronic-based collections. Another is the wish to focus on outputs rather than inputs. 3. CAUL would like to use the data that it has collected over the years to form the basis for a trend analysis. 4. CAUL proposes to undertake a pilot analysis, targeting a small number of the available data elements, in an attempt to estimate the size of the full task, and ultimately its value and cost. 5. The pilot will include a number of tasks: a. for each selected element, take and sum the annual total (of all CAUL/CONZUL institutions) for each of the years in the selected range; b. prepare a visual report in several formats – part of the exercise will be for CAUL to decide which presentation option/s best suit the data. It is assumed that this will be in Excel; c. format both the tables of raw figures and the presentation/s so they may be copied into Word easily without further editing. The title of the table/visual should be included; d. for selected data ratios, prepare tables and visual presentations for the selected range of years. 6. The data elements to be compiled in this way will help to assess the change in the collections from print to electronic over the period 1991-2010. It is noted that electronic acquisitions are not recorded until 1999, and expenditure on electronic acquisitions until 2004, but the earlier data will be used to suggest the trends prior to this move. 7. The elements to be compiled, if available, will be: a. total serial titles (subscriptions): i. total electronic serial titles in aggregations; ii. total electronic serial titles in publishers’ packages; iii. total electronic serial titles subscribed individually; iv. total print serial titles; b. total non-serial titles (volumes?) i.e. books acquired: i. total non-serial titles in electronic format; ii. total non-serial titles in print format; c. expenditure on library materials: i. expenditure on electronic materials: 1. expenditure on electronic books; 2. expenditure on electronic serials; ii. expenditure on print materials: 1. expenditure on print books; 2. expenditure on print serials; d. total loans; e. total inter-library loans received: i. total returnable inter-library loans received; ii. total non-returnable inter-library loans received; 8. The ratios are to be determined but might include: a. how has the cost per book acquired changed? b. how has the cost per serial subscription changed? c. what proportion of materials expenditure is spent on electronic vs print? d. what proportion of materials expenditure is spent on serials vs books? 9. CAUL would like to invite xxxx to quote for the compilation of the requested format suitable for easy copying into Word documents. The tables and visual presentations should be in a form that is easily updated when the new year’s data becomes available. The data analyst may make observations on the data, but it is expected that the commentary on the trend data will be prepared by someone with a good understanding of the changes in libraries in universities over the period under examination. 10.
