<p>For your semester exam, find TWO newspaper page layouts that you think are fantastic.</p><p>Try looking for these pages on the following sites:  snd.org  newseum.org  pinterest (search newspaper design)</p><p>Once you’ve chosen your two pages, write down some notes about WHY you think this layout is so super. You will present the pages and your praise for them on Wednesday for your exam.</p><p>Remember some of the tips Amber gave us:  draw readers in with one important/dominant story  dominant story will have a larger headline, art, serve as center piece  use “points of entry” (pull quotes, photos, headlines etc.) to draw reader’s into a story  recognize that readers’ eyes will start upper left and work down and to the right by guiding them in that direction with points of entry  Use white space to give importance to text and pictures  Don’t use too many colors; reserve red and yellow (jarring colors) for A & E  quotes and facts can break up columns  break up headlines/avoid bumping headlines  vary column length  “stories” can sometimes be bulleted information in small spaces</p><p>And a few tips from me:  Use the page design to guide readers to the information you want them to see  Remember that your main purpose is to inform, and your design should reflect that. Avoid page layouts that are busy and distracting; use infographics, space, and other visuals to emphasize important information.  Tell a story with the layout—use photos (and other visuals) that show action, evoke emotion, and take readers on a journey.  The aesthetic of the page should fit with the “personality” of the content/section  A clean, minimalist layout is preferable to a dizzying one  Aligning your columns, pictures and other elements will keep your page clean. Readers appreciate designs that generally follow a clear grid.  Avoid fonts that are difficult to read (decorative fonts are acceptable for a feature, but otherwise not)  Be consistent in your fonts, font sizes, amount of space between objects etc.</p>
