If You Were Able to Attended One of the Two Curriculum Evenings Recently Then You Will

If you were able to attended one of the two ‘Curriculum Evenings’ recently then you will know that we have started ‘The BIG Write’ at school! If you were unable to attend either of the evenings then the information has been uploaded to the school’s website for you to access. Our website address is www.mawnanschool.com

The BIG Write is a fun and lively way of enriching the current literacy curriculum by encouraging thinking, talking and writing using four key aspects of writing: Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation. The children know these four areas as VCOP and we use superheroes to make it fun! It is built into lessons and so far the children have responded to it extremely well.

As a part of The BIG Write, the children will be taking part in school-wide extended writing every Thursday morning. The theme of the writing will not be the same in each class; it will be teacher choice dependent on the literacy they have been covering. They will be sent home on a Wednesday night with ‘Talking Homework’ for you to do with them. This involves NO writing at home…they do it in school the next day! It is a vital aspect of their BIG Write and is a key phase in the development of their writing.

“If they can’t say it, they can’t write it!”

What is Talking Homework?

On a Wednesday night the children will bring home a TALK homework slip. The TALK homework slip will tell you what the talk topic is each week and will have some pointers about what to discuss. If the talk homework slip somehow gets mislaid on the way home then please check the website where, under ‘The BIG Write’ tab, we will endeavor to add talking homework on a weekly basis!

Please turn off the TV and spend ‘special’ time talking to your children.

The following are ways we could make your talk last longer and be more interesting: . Each give your own opinions on the subject . Use the ‘because’ word to explain why you think that. . Discuss why other family members not present might have a different idea. . Use the ‘because’ word to explain why they might have a different idea. . Encourage thinking about exciting words to use to make their writing more interesting.
