Today we’re going to talk about what Connection good readers do when they come to a word they don’t know and how readers figure out tricky words. Explicit Good readers are really good word solvers. Sometimes when a good reader is reading a book, they suddenly come to a word they don’t Instruction know. They try to read it, but they can’t. It’s a tricky word. Has that ever happened to you? I know that has happened to me. It even happens to grown ups! I was reading a dinosaur book to ……. And there was a word that was a name for a dinosaur and I was very tricked when I was trying to read it!</p><p>Guided Since you have all had a time when this has happened to you and I know you are all very good readers, let’s make an anchor chart to Practice review and remind us of some things that good readers can do when they come to a word they don’t know. </p><p>Call on children and make chart together. </p><p>Okay, let’s look at our list so far. It says….. I am going to hang it up here and we are going to add to it if we think of more things that readers do when they come to a hard word.</p><p>Send Off [for I’ve brought along this big book today and as a class we are all going Independent to practice being word solvers as we read this book together. Practice] Begin reading aloud first few pages of book. Then come to a word that you do not know how to read. As a class use a word solving strategy (such as good readers look at the pictures) to decode this tricky word.</p><p>Continue to model this with other tricky words from the story.</p><p>Group Share Wow!
