<p> Inequalities and Older People Thursday 24 September 2015 10.00am – 12.30pm</p><p>Smithton Church, Inverness</p><p>Aims:</p><p> Raise awareness of what drives inequalities in older people</p><p> Examine patterns of inequalities in later life and how it relates to development of policy and practice</p><p> Explore the impact of inequalities on older people and services for older people</p><p> Raise awareness of the issues for older people as carers</p><p>Keynote speaker: Professor James Nazroo</p><p>"James Nazroo is Professor of Sociology and co-Director of the Manchester Institute for Collaborative research on Ageing at the University of Manchester, UK. He initially trained at St. George’s Hospital Medical School and later studied for a PhD in Sociology at University College London. Issues of inequality, social justice and underlying processes of stratification have been the primary focus of his research activities, which have centred on gender, ethnicity, ageing, and the interrelationships between these.</p><p>His research on inequalities in later life places him as the leading UK researcher in this field alongside a strong international reputation. His research on ageing has been concerned to understand the patterns and determinants of social and health inequalities in ageing populations, with a particular interest on the ‘transmission’ of inequalities across the life course, patterns of ‘retirement’, formal and informal social and civic participation, and how class operates post-retirement. He has conducted studies on quality of life for older people among different ethnic groups in the UK, on inequalities in health at older ages, and on routes into retirement and the impact of retirement on health and well-being. He is Principal Investigator for the Fraill Programme, an interdisciplinary study of inequalities in later life, and co-Principal Investigator of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, which is a multi-disciplinary panel study of those aged 50 and older, and part of an international ‘family’ of very similar studies. He plays an advisory role for a number of leading international and national studies on ageing and regularly provides policy advice, including authoring two recent Government Office for Science Foresight reviews on the ‘Future of Ageing’.
