English 9 Pre AP Summer Reading List

The scope of AP Literature and Composition covers all literature from 16th century to the present (including British and American literature as well as other literature in translation). While the College Board will not provide reading recommendations for students in AP and Pre-AP classes, it behooves students to begin a comprehensive reading plan as early as possible. Several of the most commonly referenced novels on previous AP English Literature and Composition Exams that are generally not included in the curriculum at Tanque Verde are listed below:

Title Author Invisible Man Ralph Ellison Jane Eyre Charlotte Bronte Billy Budd Herman Melville Ceremony Leslie Marmon Silko Lord Jim Joseph Conrad The Importance of Being Earnest Oscar Wilde The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain Cider House Rules John Irving

Nota Bene: I have not read all of these titles and so cannot vouch for their content. Please research the novels and decide Directions: Choose and read from this list as many works that you have not already read from this list as possible. Then plan and draft a well-developed analysis essay pertaining to the themes, characters, or settings of that work. DO NOT simply summarize the novel! Essays must use MLA format (double spaced, Times New Roman 12 with appropriate heading in upper left) and include a Works Cited page for the edition of any book(s) referenced in the essay. Minimum length of the essay will be 500 words. Students will be submit their draft essays electronically the first week of school and may be required to make significant revisions to this draft if it falls far below expectations. These essays will aid the instructor in determining writing and literature goals for the school year.
