<p> Spanish I</p><p>Teacher: Carolina Zusinas E-mail: [email protected]</p><p>Conference Period: 5th Block 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.</p><p>COURSE OVERVIEW:</p><p>Spanish I is an eighteen-week course that serves as an introduction to the language and culture of Hispanic peoples. The course emphasizes both the verbal and written communicative skills. Students learn the use of the language through interactive experiences. </p><p>Vocabulary: Grammar: Introduction of Basic Alphabet, Articles Numbers, Colors, Shapes, Time, Pronouns Weather, Seasons Adjectives Commands Adverbs Common phrases Prepositions Questions Present Tense Regular Verbs School Present Tense Irregular Verbs Family Stem changing verbs Food Simple Sentences & Paragraph Clothing Construction Body & Face</p><p>Projects and Presentations to watch for!  “likes and dislikes” : due 3rd week  Menu : due 12th week  Family Tree : due 14th week  Mini-Yo due 17th week</p><p>SUPPLIES: Composition notebook at least 200 pages 2 Boxes of tissue 5 packages – 100 count small index cards Pens/pencils Red pen Crayons or Map colors GRADING SCALE: The grading scale for the 9-week grade is as follows:  Quizzes: 20%  Homework: 20%  Listening/Verbal Skills: 25%  Product (Projects, presentations, unit tests): 35%</p><p>CHEATING will not be tolerated, whether on daily work or tests. If work is being shared between two students, the grade of the paper being used will be divided between the two. If the student is cheating on a test, the test will be taken, a 0 recorded, and the occurrence documented. No make-up work or retest will be offered.</p><p>HOMEWORK Any student failing to complete his or her assigned homework will receive a zero (0) grade for the incomplete work, in addition to the failing grade for incomplete work, the student will be required to attend mandatory tutorials in order to complete the assigned work. Homework not turned in when called for will be considered late and will not be accepted, unless extenuating circumstances arise, such as hospitalization, death, or an absence on the day due. In the unfortunate case that one of the three instances occurs, a blue slip denoting an excused absence is to be brought by the student the day he/she returns. If a student comes to school, but is absent from my class the student is still responsible for his or her homework, project, quiz or test due on the assigned date. Unit projects, whether individual or group, will be accepted one day after the due date, but will receive a penalty of 20 points deducted from the final grade of the project. If a group completes the project, the one(s) responsible for the delay will be fully penalized.</p><p>MAKE-UP WORK: On the day you return from your absence, you will be able to find your make-up assignment(s) on the wall next to the portfolio shelf. Please refer to the policy in the STUDENT HANDBOOK, regarding make-up work. This policy will be followed.</p><p>RETESTING: Test grades below 70 may be retested before or after school during tutorials for up to 2 days after the return of a test. The student being retested must attend tutorials in order to meet re-teaching requirements for the test. Upon taking the retest, the retest grade will be as handbook policy to determine the final grade. If the student does not attend tutorials in preparation for the retest, the student will not be allowed to retest and the original test grade will stand. </p><p>EXEMPTION POLICY: Please refer to STUDENT HANDBOOK, regarding the exemption policy. NOTE: Parents have the right to request that their student take the final exam, even if he or she is exempt.</p><p>TUTORIALS: Tutorials are available in L Hall each morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. and each afternoon until 3:30 p.m. Students may attend in order to receive additional assistance. Otherwise, students must attend when mandatory tutorials are served by the teacher due to a non-satisfactory progress report or grade, as written in the student handbook.</p><p>CLASSROOM RULES:</p><p>1. Be ready to start when the bell rings. 2. Talk when given permission to do so. 3. No gum, food, drinks, objects in your mouth, or poor attitudes allowed in the classroom. 4. If you do not know what a word means, look it up in the dictionary. The dictionary is our friend. </p><p>WATER IS THE ONLY BEVERAGE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. NO OTHER FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED UNLESS DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS, WHERE UPON I WILL THEN BE INFORMED BY THE CLINIC.</p><p>TARDINESS: The first two days of class will be a grace period as the student finds his/her way around the campus according to his/her schedule, yet after the two day grace period each tardy will be documented, and turned into Assistant Principal Ms. Jennifer Sikes</p><p>CONSEQUENCES: In the event that one of the foretold rules is not abided by, the following consequences will incur: 1st Offense: Verbal warning and documentation</p><p>2nd Offense: Documentation, detention signed and sent to the office, and Student/Teacher conference.</p><p>3rd Offense: Documentation, disciplinary referral sent to the office, and Parent/Teacher conference. Severe infractions, such as foul language or gestures, belligerent behavior toward the teacher, threatening, violent behavior, or any other offense noted in the Student Code of Conduct will be instantly referred to the office, documented, and dealt with according to the process and procedures recorded in the Student Code of Conduct and at the discretion of Mr. David Pinnell.</p><p>PRIVILEDGES: !PESOS! Each student will receive $3 pesos per nine weeks. Additional pesos may be earned through class participation, as listed below:</p><p> Extra/Exemplary class participation (i.e. answering questions no one else will attempt)  Extra book and/or workbook exercises on subject matter currently being studied in class  Ads, labels, news, notices, pamphlets, etc. written in Spanish that will compliment current instruction  Cultural/historical reports (verbal and written).  Samples of cultural items (food, music, dress, etc.) to accompany class activity  Helping in the classroom  Coming to tutorials.</p><p>Pesos may be used as follows:</p><p> to pay for a tardy to class (limit: 1 per semester) ...…………………………………….. ………….$5 pesos  to buy an assignment (in advance only)(limit: 1 per 9 weeks)………………..$10 pesos  to add points to test or product grades (other than 9-week tests or final exam) $5 pesos/1 point (Limited to 20 points per test or product grade.)  to celebrate a “Cultural Day” (cultural games, foods, music) ………………….. $100 class pesos</p><p>$Pesos$ can and will be taken from a student who is: . borrowing the teacher’s supplies and materials and … . talking while the teacher is talking. . Saying the s… words. ** CLASS PESOS: $10 pesos will be deposited in “el banco” when class participation is 100% for the week (all work completed, no student absences, and no disciplinary referrals!).</p><p>*** There is no limit of pesos earned per nine weeks. Pesos carry over until course ends.</p><p>CONFERENCES: If, for any reason, the parent or guardian of the student desires to meet with me, he/she may schedule an appointment during my conference period between 1 to 2 p.m., or before or after school if no other time is possible. An appointment may be scheduled by calling the high school office at (903) 342-3641. </p><p>STUDENT CONTRACT:</p><p>I, ______, understand that the study of a foreign language can be challenging and will require effort in and outside of class. If I am having difficulty with the course material, I will attend tutorials in order to receive further instruction if the difficulty continues.</p><p>I, ______, have read the course description, grading scale, class rules, as well as the consequences and privileges, and I understand what is expected of me.
