<p>AVID Instructor – Mrs. B. Vogt AVID Course Information 2010 – 2011</p><p>AVID is a program dedicated to helping students achieve their goals of going to college. The AVID class, held within the regular school day, provides support, academic monitoring and tutoring. Writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading, along with tutorials and study skills, are the core strategies of the program. Each AVID student carries a binder in which he or she is required to keep materials from all academic classes. Students keep track of assignments on assignment sheets and are required to take daily notes in all academic classes. The notebooks are graded weekly for content and organization by tutors or teachers. Led by tutors, students participate in tutorial groups in the AVID classroom. In addition, students are taught study skills, test preparation, time management and the writing process. Communication between the AVID teacher and the parent(s) is essential. I will contact you to share your student’s progress, and appreciate any information you share with me. At home, parents can see to it that students are doing their homework in a quiet place with few interruptions. By asking your student about his/her day, and inquiring about homework and the events of the school, you will bridge what could be a great gap between his/her school life and home life. When the two are connected, successes increase. In addition, stressing your belief that your student can succeed in high school and attend college will also motivate him/her to work harder and achieve more. </p><p>Contact Information Barbara L. Vogt Room 204 School E-mail: [email protected]</p><p>Class Web sites: [email protected] </p><p>Supplies Required  4 inch 3-ring binder  Dividers (1 for each class)  Zipper pouch to store supplies  Two or more pens  Two or more sharpened pencils  Filler paper  Highlighters Recommended  Sheet protectors  Erasers  12-inch ruler</p><p>Grading  Binder checks, classwork/homework assignments (Classwork in NC Wise)  Tutorials (Labs in NC Wise)  Portfolio (Projects in NC Wise)  Community Service (Homework in NC Wise)</p><p>Tentative Assignments:  Week 1: Welcome back/AVID overview – AVID mission, tutorials, I AM Poems;  Week 2: Review AVID corner stones – organization, time management and Cornell notes; playing different roles within groups and topics, A Personal Narrative About My Community;  Week 3: Inquiry and C-notes in preparation for tutorials; Costa’s levels of questioning; positive participation in group activities, Career Projects; weekly project logs; weekly calendars  Week 4: Clear understanding of tutorial process with emphasis on collaborative group dynamics; AVID tutorial learning process, Collaborative Project, Reading Three Cups of Tea;  Week 5: Goal-setting and setting and following up on appropriate goals; long term community service involvement; recording information gained by listening; writing assignment;  Week 6: Continuation of “Explanation of Life Goals” Expository Essay; research methods; pre-writing; contributing effectively to discussions;  Week 7: Advancing a thesis; test preparation; “six-trait” tools and feedback to edit and revise drafts: seeking and offering constructive feedback;  Week 8: Completing the writing process; self evaluation; listening strategies; participating positively in group activities; AVID portfolio reflection;  Week 9: Reflection on tenth-grade experiences and preparing for college activities; writing to learn; setting and following up on appropriate goals; college file;  Week 10: A look at leadership and ways to get involved in school communities; leadership models; active citizenship on multiple levels;  Week 11: College research; campus life; collegiate options;  Week 12: Continuing college research; campus life and collegiate options; research methods;  Week 13: Continuing college research and making effective presentations;  Week 14: Public speaking practice; making effective presentations; listening strategies; participating positively in group activities;  Week 15: Timed writing and academic vocabulary practice;  Week 16: Timed writing practice;  Week 17: Timed writing practice;  Week 18: Preparation of semester finals; test-taking strategies; timed writing an/or assessment.</p><p>Class Expectations 1. Be ON TIME. School rules will apply in regard to tardies and absences. 2. Be PREPARED. Each day students should bring their AVID binder and planner to class. On tutorial days (Tuesday and Thursday), students should come to class with necessary materials (i.e. textbooks, worksheets and notes from other classes). 3. NO eating or drinking in the classroom. 4. Students will NOT abuse classroom computers, i.e. no playing games, downloading music or checking e-mail; this includes changing computer backgrounds and settings. 5. The classroom is NOT your locker. Please do not leave behind your notes, notebook, textbooks, clothes, etc. Do not bring your bookbag to class. 6. Use class time wisely. 7. Like all other classes, the school’s policy for making up work applies to this class. Refer to your student handbook for guidelines. 8. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
