Please also see our School Games website at https://www.yourschoolgames.com/ to keep updates with our sports events.

We have had an exciting start to the school year. We have renewed or Bronze Level School Games Award for 2014-15 and this year we are working on achieving the Silver Level award. We have welcomed Mr Wade and Mrs Bannister as our new PE teachers, who are also working to share their expertise as professional development with the class teachers. All children in Years 1-6 have participated in intra-school competitions and children have visited Chipping Norton School to participate in 4 partnership inter-school events, we have had 115 attendances, at which we have achieved 2 winning trophies. Year 6 had a visit from the always enthusiastic, Dennis Victory, where they learnt a street dance routine and Year 2 had an African dance workshop with Mrs Sellars. We have also had over 60 attendances at extra-curricular sports clubs every week. All children have been surveyed to audit our links with external clubs or lessons, and to monitor children’s performances at higher levels outside school.

Extra-curricular Clubs

Following last term’s survey we have made some amendments to the extra-curricular sports clubs on offer, hopefully these meet many of the requests people made and enable an increasing number of our children to ensure they are active beyond their school PE lessons. The following changes have been made:

Dance Club ~ many people requested different dance clubs. We are unable to offer dance requiring expert coaching such as ballet and tap, but have added a dance club that will cover areas such as Zumba, street dance and cheerleading. Gym Club ~ many people requested the extension of the offer of Wade gym club to Key Stage 1. To this end we have extended this to two sessions 3.15-4.15pm for Years 1-3 and 4.00-5.00pm for Years 4-6. Mrs Voce will supervise the children for changing between sessions and the Year 4-6 children prior to their session. Sports Club & Sports Leaders Award ~ many Key Stage 1 children requested sports specific clubs including football, rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, basketball, netball. It would not be possible for us to provide these all as discrete clubs and advice at this age is for children to develop their generic Fundamental skills. Therefore we hope anyone interested in these sports will come along to this multi-skills clubs. We are also offering the Year 5 & 6 children to come along and support at this club. They will develop their skills at planning and carrying out activities with the younger children and through 10 hours volunteering in club time and during playtimes will have the opportunity to achieve their Sports Leaders award.

“Live, Love, Care, Think, Learn, Dare” D:\Docs\2018-01-01\02228ce5116e9fb523a3b4d13a80d441.docx Netball & Tag-Rugby ~ the popular Key Stage 2 lunchtime club is moving on to new sports for this term, which will also support our teams in the Chipping Norton Partnership events.

There were a number of other clubs requested. Athletics, cricket and rounders will come in the summer terms. We will be looking at developing running as a club and the possibility of canoeing again. We do not have the staff to offer more specialist sports such as judo, karate, ballet, tap, trampolining… However over the next term Mrs Voce will be putting together a directory of local clubs that offer these sports from the links found in the sports survey, where you will be able to get details from the sports noticeboard to enable you to participate in a range of sports outside school.

Please remember that we have a fantastic facility with the hard playground, field and hall, so if you know any sports providers looking for facilities to hire to provide their clubs or lessons put them in touch with the school office. This helps us extend our community links and the activities we can offer our children.

School Games ~ Intra-School Competition

All children in the classes from Year 1-6 took part in competitions in their colour teams, based on the units they had been doing in their PE lessons. This is an important opportunity for the children to perform the skills they have been developing and put into practise the Olympic values that form part of that legacy. After the competition the results were announced in well-done assembly and trophies presented. This term the trophy winners in each year were as follows:

Year 1 ~ Fundamentals ~ Red Year 2 ~ Fundamentals ~ Red Year 3 ~ Gymnastics ~ Yellow Year 4 ~ Gymnastics ~ Red Year 5 ~ Swimming ~ Green Year 6 ~ Hockey ~ Yellow

Meaning that the over-all winners for the Autumn Term were the Red Team.

School Games ~ Inter-School Events

We participated in four inter-school events as part of the Chipping Norton Partnership this term. A number of these offer the opportunity to progress to the next level of the School Games at West Oxford or county level for the winners. A number of children have written reports about these events shown below; these are also included on our School Games page website as blogs.

Year 5 & 6 Football Tournament ~ written by William Porter

Hook Norton School Year 6s and some Year 5s entered the CNPS Football Tournament. The Boy’s Football Team came second and the Girl’s Team came third. The Boy’s Team did remarkably well, only losing one game, which was effectively the final. There were some outstanding performances from all the players, each playing their part. Josh Brown and Jerome Davies playing exceptionally well, winning the Sporting Champion award. They only lost out to Kingham, losing 2-0.The Girl’s Team played extremely well, coming third with some brilliant displays, a special mention to Victoria Harris and Imogen Nicholls for winning the Sporting Champion award.

We all played extremely well, some brilliant goals and we behaved extremely well. We put in our all, and got some very good results! OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Year 6 Hockey Tournament ~ written by Lottie Denne

Hook Norton school Year 6s entered the Chipping Norton School Hockey Tournament. We were put into teams called Courage, Friendship, Respect, Determination and Equality, and we had to do a lot of relay races. We had to run, jump over hurdles, speed bounce, pass batons, crawl under obstacles and perform front rolls.

The event was very well organised by Mrs Philips and the Sports Leaders from Chipping Norton School, and one of our ex-pupils, Charlie McQuaid, hosted the event. We had coloured stickers in our teams and the different colours performed in turn. We all had a wonderful time and Determination won. Some of us gained certificates for excellent sportsmanship. It was great fun and we would like to take part again.

Year 3 & 4 Ballskills & Benchball Fetival ~ written by Lukas Wahlen

On Wednesday 2nd December there was a benchball festival at Chipping Norton School. Year 3 and 4 from Hook Norton School went on a gigantic coach. It was a boring, long, bumpy ride, it was so boring some people almost fell asleep. When we got there we split into teams. I was in Portugal. I knew quite a lot of children in my team from the other partnership schools, including my rugby friends. We were very good at the first couple of matches and won them all by at least 7 points. Our leaders were some of our ex-pupils, Max, Will and some other people. We won the whole festival. I interviewed Alfie Newman, he said, “It was funny, fabulous and quite nerve-wracking. I’ve never won before!”

We hope that this newsletter will help keep everyone aware of the wide range of PE and school sports opportunities that we are able to offer at Hook Norton School and as part of the Chipping Norton Partnership of Schools. Please let Mrs Voce know if you have any other ideas or are able to volunteer or offer support in extending this provision as we aim to increase levels of participation and achieve Silver School Games Award.

“Live, Love, Care, Think, Learn, Dare” D:\Docs\2018-01-01\02228ce5116e9fb523a3b4d13a80d441.docx
