Unit: Integers Day 1

Unit: Integers Day 1

Unit: Integers Topic: What is an integer?

SCO’s A12 represent integers (including zero) concretely, pictorially, and symbolically, using a variety of models A13 compare and order integers B11 add and subtract integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically to solve problems B14 solve and pose problems which utilize addition and subtraction of integers Learning By the end of the lesson today, I want students to be able to: Outcomes  Subtract integers using counters, number line and symbols. (What do I want  Represent subtraction of integers using counters, numberline and students to symbols. know?)  Create and solve word problems involving integers. Plan Day 1:  Warm-Up – Mimio Adding Integers – to review addition  Show PowerPoint: Subtracting Integers (concrete models). Discuss as we go through the slides. Have students complete examples as we proceed through the PPT.  Circulate and monitor concrete representations of subtraction. Day 2: Warm-Up – Mimio Mental Math – Subtracting Integers – to review subtracting +/- numbers with counters  Review concrete modeling of subtractions.  Hand out practice sheets for concrete representations and have students complete them. (Section 2.5 of workbook + 03- soustraction_concrete_practice.doc) Day 3:  Warm-Up – Integer War – Subtracting Integers – to review subtracting +/- numbers  Show PowerPoint: Subtracting Integers (number line models). Discuss as we go through the slides. Have students complete examples as we proceed through the PPT.  Circulate and monitor number line representations of subtraction.  Hand out practice sheets for concrete representations and have students complete them. Home Practice Game: Subtracting intgers war – teach to sibling or parent Practice: Worksheets – Subtracting integers with counters, Subtracting integers with number lines. Website: Material  Word Files  PPT/Mimio  Websites Assessment  Observation and discussion (How will I know  Check-up- Conversation and Observation they know?) What to do for  For students who are not quite meeting the expectation, reinforce students not the use of the how to guide and counters or number line. meeting or  If necessary, have students complete extra practice questions exceeding through a site such as Khan Academy or IXL Math outcomes (What will I do if they don’t know?) Adaptations  Help with creation of cheat sheet or provide cheat sheet.  Reduce the number of questions.  Encourage the use of the counters or number line to subtract integers  Scaffold questions to ensure that it is clear what to do at each step.  Use graphic organizers to help students organize work.
