Nitza E. Coleman CSUF 1979

I was 25 years old and already with two kids when I graduated from nursing school. My husband Jeffrey was particularly supportive as he became a part-time stay at home dad while I attended nursing school. I attended the 1977-1979 class. I graduated in December of 1979, one semester ahead of my group.

Since I graduated: I worked in pediatrics and did pediatric intensive care transport (1981-1988) I managed the day surgery at Children's Hospital (1988-1993) Completed my Masters in Business Administration at CSUF Director of the NICU and SCN and nursery satellites (1995-1997) Clinical Manager Utilization support (1998-1999) Emergency Department (1999-2000)

Went to Law School from 1999-2003 Accepted a position at Kaiser in the Quality Department in 2005 became the Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety

What I remember from nursing school: I remember my study group, Tricia Hardy, George Langley, and Tracy Kutsenkow.

I remember having a lot of problems getting started in nursing school. In 1977 when I started in the nursing program, the department had a policy that it would not accept any pregnant student. I was pregnant when I started school that fall and as usual, I was told thank you but no thank you. I was able to stay on the program, not without making a few waves and gaining a bad reputation for being a trouble maker. (I had to threaten to sue the university based on discrimination laws.) Well, I made it through with the support of my team members and a few teachers. It was the biggest lesson of my life. I learned to fight for what I believe in and perhaps I should thank the school for that. I made my mark by being allowed to stay through my pregnancy but also graduate ahead of my group. The policy was discontinued.
