Additional considerations related to product toxicity or other High Performance building criteria are included where appropriate.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes recommendations for volatile organic compound (VOC) content in sealants and sealant primers that are used in interior construction applications (e.g., acoustical applications, glazings, joint fillers, ductwork, plumbing) and/or other sealants/primers that are exposed to building occupants (e.g., interior-side sealants at windows).

1.2 REFERENCES / QUALITY ASSURANCE (for indoor air quality criteria)

A. Bay Area Air Resources Board Regulation 8, Rule 51, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, www.baaqmd.gov.

1.03 SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A. Manufacturer’s certification of product compliance with sealant VOC criteria per section 2.01 of this specification. B. Material Safety Data Sheets.

1.04 DELIVERY AND STORAGE

A. To the extent feasible, do not store sealants or sealant primers with materials that have a high capacity to adsorb VOC emissions (i.e., materials which are woven, fibrous or porous in nature, such as acoustical ceilings, carpet, textiles, etc.). Do not store sealants or sealant primers in occupied spaces.

PART 2 – PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS

A. Environmentally-Preferable Product Criteria:

1. VOC Content The volatile organic compound (VOC) content of sealants and sealant primers used in interior applications shall not exceed the limits defined in Regulation 8 (Organic Compounds), Rule 51 (Adhesive and Sealant Products) of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), of the State of California. The VOC limits defined by LOW TOXICITY MATERIALS SPECIFICATIONS NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

BAAQMD (based on 5/2/01 amendments) are as follows. All VOC limits are defined in grams per liter, less exempt compounds.

Sealants: Architectural……………………………. 250

Sealant Primers: Architectural (Non-porous installation) ...250 Architectural (Porous installation)………775

Sealants, primers, and cleaners required for sealant installation must also comply with all local regulations controlling VOC content.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 INSTALLATION

A. Comply, at minimum, with sealant and sealant primer manufacturer recommendations for space ventilation during and after installation. Where feasible, the following ventilation conditions shall be maintained during the sealant/sealant primer curing period or for 72 hours after installation: 1) supply 100% outside air 24 hours a day; 2) supply airflow at a rate of 6 air changes per hour, when outside temperatures are between 55 degrees F and 85 degrees F and humidity is between 30% and 60%; and 3) supply airflow at a rate of 1.5 air changes per hour, when outside air conditions are not within the range stipulated in item 2 above. B. To the extent practical, allow sealant and sealant primer installations to cure prior to the installation of materials that adsorb VOCs. Materials that adsorb VOCs include carpets, textiles, unprimed gwb, and acoustical ceiling panels.

END OF SECTION 07920
