Bienvenidos a La Clase De Español

¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DEL ESPAÑOL!

Welcome to Pre-AP Spanish III, a course which will expand your knowledge of one of the fastest growing languages in both the United States and the world. This course is the precursor to AP Spanish Language and Culture, and is designed to prepare you for advanced studies. It will be challenging but rewarding, and your success is directly dependent upon your attitude and effort.

Texts and Required Materials -Gahala, E., Carlin, P.H., Heining-Boynton, A.L., Otheguy, R., & Rupert, B.J. (2007). ¡Avancemos! Level 3. Evanston, IL: McDougal Littell.

You should bring these items to class EACH DAY: - Pen/Pencil -3 Ring Binder

Optional (But Highly Recommended) Materials -Spanish-English Dictionary -601 Spanish Verbs

Classroom Expectations Your work should be your own. Please use your book or dictionary to help you understand and complete assignments, and you may even look up individual words or 2-3 word phrases using online dictionaries. However, you may not use translation services. In addition to providing less-than-accurate results, use of these is considered cheating. You will be written up and receive an automatic zero on any assignment that has been translated by outside sources (this includes using Spanish-speaking friends, relatives, classmates, etc.).

The rules of the classroom are: 1. Show respect for everyone and everything in the class. 2. Be on time and prepared for class by the bell. 3. If you do not understand something, please ask for an explanation. 4. Participate in class and pay attention.

Grading Tests/Projects...... 65% Quizzes ...... 20% Class Participation/ Homework . . . . . 15%

Tests and Quizzes Your progress in this class will be monitored through quizzes, given at least twice a week. I may also give unannounced quizzes (i.e., pop quizzes) at times. You will be notified about tests before they are given.

Class Participation Language is learned through use, so we will communicate in Spanish in this class. Mistakes will be common, and everyone will make them. However, if you refuse to use Spanish you will not receive credit for the assigned task.

Homework Homework will be assigned regularly, but the actual assignments will vary. These are not given simply as “busy work”, but to improve your Spanish proficiency. You benefit from completing the assignments and I will periodically collect and check homework.

Late Work/ Make-Up Work All work is due at the beginning of the class hour for which it is assigned. No work will be accepted late. As a general rule, make-up work will be accepted only in the case of an excused absence. No make-up pop-quizzes will be administered regardless of the reason for the absence. Make up tests must be scheduled with the teacher within a week of the missed test.

Projects Projects will be assigned several times throughout the course of the year. Any written components are to be typed and double-spaced. Students will be given a rubric when a project is assigned and will be graded according to the rubric. Projects are due on the assigned day; any project turned in late loses at least 25 points per day.

Cell Phone Policy At the discretion of the teacher, students will occasionally use cell phones for class-related activities (using online dictionaries, CNN en español, etc.). Phones are not for personal use (e.g., texts, Twitter, Snapchat) and students using them in off-task activities will have their phones taken up.

Email: [email protected]

I want and expect you to be successful in Spanish, but it is up to you to put forth your best effort.
