Monday: (Topic 11-1) Fractions and Division (5.NF.3) Students use fractions to represent division, and they locate and place fractions on a number line. A fraction describes the division of a whole into equal parts, and it can be interpreted in more than one way depending on the whole to be divide. Assignment: Practice 11-1 Tuesday: (Topic 11-2) Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers Students will multiply a fraction by a whole number. The product of a whole number and a fraction can be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is repeated addition. Multiplying a while number by a fraction involves division as well as multiplication. The product is a fraction of the whole number. Assignment: Practice 11-2 Wednesday: (Topic 11-4) Multiplying Two Fractions Students will give the product of two fractions. A unit square can be used to show the area meaning of fraction multiplication. When you multiply two fractions that are both less than 1, the product is smaller than either fraction. To multiply fractions, write the product of the numerators over the product of the denominators. Assignment: Practice 11-4 Thursday: (Topic 11-5) Area of a Rectangle Students will learn how to find area of rectangles. A unit square can be used to show the area meaning of fraction multiplication. When you multiply two fractions that are both less than 1, the product is smaller than either fraction. To multiply fractions, write the product of the numerators over the product of the denominators. Students will watch a brainpopjr on area before starting the lesson. Assignment: Practice 11-5 Friday: (Topic 11-6) Multiplying Mixed Numbers Students will multiply mixed numbers. One way to find the product of mixed numbers is to change the calculation to an equivalent one involving improper fractions. Assignment: Practice 11-6 Monday: (Topic 11-7) Multiplication as Scaling Students will compare the size of the product to the size of one factor without multiplying as they begin to consider multiplication as scaling. The relative size of the factors can be used to determine the relative size of the product. Assignment: Practice 11-7 Tuesday: (Topic 11-9) Dividing Whole Numbers by a Unit Fractions Students will divide whole numbers by fractions. One way to find the quotient of a whole number divided by a fraction is to multiply the whole number by the reciprocal of the fraction. Assignment: Practice 11-9 Wednesday: (Topic 11-10) Dividing Unit Fractions by Non-Zero Whole Numbers Students will discover the inverse relationship between multiplication and division that will help them to divide unit fractions by whole numbers. The inverse relationship between multiplication and division can be used to divide with fractions. Assignment: Practice 11-10 </p>
