During the first half of the course we will study the history of geometry and measurement, patterns among shapes, the measurement process with three dimensional and two dimensional figures, and ruler-and- compass constructions. The second half of the course focuses on proportional thinking in geometry, symmetry and transformational geometry. Throughout we will explore applications of geometric concepts to the real world and other areas of mathematics. Class sessions will involve numerous hands-on activities, collaborative problem solving, use of technology such as Geometer’s Sketchpad, and making connections to the curriculms of the participant teachers.

Meeting Dates and Times: This course will meet from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with approximately 60 minutes for lunch on the following dates: Week 1: June 5 – 9 Week 2: June 12 – 16

Attendance : is mandatory due to the intense nature of the course. Any time missed will have to be made up by arranging with the instructors. More than one day missed brings forfeiture of stipend and credit. Credit: Four hours of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences graduate credit from the University of Colorado, Denver, will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. Registration for the course and payment of the $300 tuition is mandatory. Stipends: A $1500 stipend will be awarded to RM-MSMSP partner district participants upon successful completion of the course. An additional $1500 will be awarded when the corresponding Structured Follow-Up is completed in the fall/spring (indicate which). Only partner district participants are eligible for stipends. Assignments and Grading: Be very explicit about assignments. Homework is allowed but should not be too onerous. Be mindful that the teachers will be very tired at the end of the day. Be explicit about which assignments will be counted as part of their grade, and what the corresponding weighting of those assignments will be. Also be explicit about what the late policy is, when they are due, etc. Included in this section should be a description of how grades will be awarded. Materials & Supplies: DiscoveringGeometry text; Geometer’s Sketchpad; Compass; Handout packet

1 Innovation Project: One of the requirements for successful completion of the fall (or spring) Structured Follow Up course is implementation of an Innovation Project. Each of the RM-MSMSP courses has its own Innovation Project requirements. In this course, (briefly outline innovation project requirements). More information about the Innovation Project will be provided as the course progresses, but one of the requirements for successful completion of this course is to turn in an outline of your Innovation Project.

Schedule of Topics Covered see attached daily schedule

Related Websites

2
