E-JOURNAL PORTAL & JOURNAL LINKER MCC Library Guide

E-JOURNAL PORTAL This database service allows you to determine if a periodical title is available in one of our online databases. To find the portal, go to the library homepage, select “Periodical Lists” and then select “E-Journal Portal.” The link is also on the left-hand side of the “Services for Faculty” web page. More information about the functioning of this portal will be discussed in relation to the Journal Linker.

JOURNAL LINKER In the WilsonWeb and Ebscohost databases, you might encounter a link next to certain database citations labeled "Journal Linker." By clicking on "Journal Linker," you can find out if the full- text of the periodical is available in another library subscription database.

Journal Linker in Ebscohost Some citations that are not available in the full-text will have a "Journal Linker" icon. The images below show 1) a citation with the full-text provided indicated by "HTML Full Text" and "PDF Full Text" and 2) a citation with the "Journal Linker" link, indicating that the full-text is not provided in this Ebsco database but is available elsewhere.

Examples of Citations in Ebscohost

1

2

When you click on the Journal Linker option, a separate window will open that will display the titles of alternate databases that might include the periodical title you are seeking.

Journal Linker in Wilson Web All search results in WilsonWeb will include a "Journal Linker" icon. You only want to use the "Journal Linker" feature when you have retrieved a citation that does not include the full-text of the article. The images below show 1) a citation with the full-text provided, indicated by two icons: a lined box (HTML full text) and a red symbol (PDF full text) and 2) a citation with the "Journal Linker" link, indicating that the full-text is not provided in this WilsonWeb database but may be available elsewhere. Examples of Citations in WilsonWeb

1

2

Journal Linker Results Page (E-Journal Portal) The new window that opens up will be entitled "E-Journal Portal." The screen will show the title of the periodical you are seeking and the list of databases that are known to include the electronic full-text of all or most of a magazine or journal. The list will tell you the publication years that are available for the title.

September 2004 is available in Student Resource Center Gold or MCC Periodical Holdings

If one of the alternate locations for the full-text is identified as "MCC Periodical Holdings," you will need to come to the library on campus to retrieve the hard-copy version of the article. Other locations listed in the Journal Linker results are within electronic databases.

One of two things will occur when you click on the name of a database to go to the alternate full-text: o A second window will open up and present a browsable list of the available years and issues of the selected periodical title (Ebscohost, WilsonWeb and some Gale databases). o A second window will open up to the search screen at which point you will need to conduct a search for the article using the title of both the article and periodical (most Gale databases and Electric Library).
