Integrated Arts Lesson Plan #5

Integrated Arts Lesson Plan #5

Name: Bo Green

Grade Level: 8th Estimated Length of Time: 30 min. Date of Lesson: 5/14

Key Terms (Stage 1): Quadratic functions, parabola, symmetry, axis of symmetry, frame of reference, vertex, apex, maximum/minimum value, x-intercepts, quadratic formula

Concepts: Quadratic equations and parabolas

Arts Integrated: Creative Drawing, Visualization

Determining Acceptable Evidence (Stage 2): Students will create a drawing incorporating all of the key concepts learned in this quadratics unit. Successful completion will include the symmetric modeling of a real-world structure or one of student creation as well as the accurate labeling of as many of the key terms above as possible. In addition, since the quadratic formula is a key tool in this unit it is to be creatively and accurately included in the student drawing.

Planned Learning Experiences (Stage 3): As a unit culminating engagement, after the teacher projects images of excellent real-world examples of parabolas (The Arch, Golden Gate Bridge, Very Large Array and McDonalds logo) students are to individually brainstorm and choose or create an application of quadratics. They then draw and color the image, label key terms and the quadratic formula, present their drawing to the class and hand it in to the teacher for feedback.

Materials and Equipment: MacBook, graph paper, ruler, pencil, colored pencils and markers

Procedure:

 Introduction : Students previously learned all key terms and how to draw parabolas. The teacher projects images and information on the SmartBoard and describes the assignment.

 Body of Lesson: Teacher projects images and video on SmartBoard (5 min.) Students brainstorm ideas (5 min.) Students create drawing (10 min.) Students label all key terms (3 min.) Students present their drawings to the class (5 min.) Teacher closes the lesson (2 min.)

 Closure or Planned Endings : Teacher leads a discussion where students connect the power of integrating the arts and mathematics to create long-term understanding and retention.
