I have reviewed the American Corrections Association,

National Commission on Correctional Healthcare, and the Prison Rape Elimination Act websites.

Note. These resources include some of the policies and procedures specific to the mutual professionalism, ethics, and suggested treatment recommended for staff and inmates or offenders. I have selected on of the accredited institutions listed in the Accredited Facility

Directory on the American Corrections Association website by searching for ACA accredited facilities. The one I have chosen is the Penitentiary of New Mexico. After selecting an accredited institution of my choice, identify some of the policies and procedures outlined within the Prison

Rape Elimination Act website.

The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA) is the first United States federal law passed dealing with the sexual assault of prisoners. The bill was signed into law on September 4,

2003. There is a zero-tolerance of prison rape under this Act. This Act also covers juvenile detention centers. The definition for prison is large and also includes maximum security, medium security, low security, holding cells and jails, plus anywhere that would include inmates’ detention.

I will write about 150-word responses to each of the following questions regarding the accredited institution I have chosen, Penitentiary of New Mexico: what standards or policies exist for professionalism, ethics, and treatment toward staff and inmates or offenders for accredited institutions? PRISON ASSIGNMENT 3

Correctional staff and inmates are in ideal situations supposed to treat each other with respect. The same laws that exist on the outside of prison settings also exist on the inside of prison settings and through an honor system, if an inmate follows the rules of the prison, they will be rewarded through the prison system for their good behavior.

Does the Prison Rape Elimination Act establish specific policies? If so, what are they?

The specific policies of the Prison Rape Elimination Act are a zero-tolerance of prison rape that exists for all prison-type facilities where inmates may be detained from maximum security to holding cells.

What is function of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care?

The National Commission on Correctional Health Care is meant to establish proper and effective healthcare to prison inmates.

Part II: Accredited Corrections Institution Policy Draft: the American Correctional

Association, National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the Prison Rape

Elimination Act standards all relate to the mutual professionalism, ethics, and treatment recommended for staff and inmates or offenders. I will imagine I am a prison warden at the institution I selected in Part I of this assignment. I will write a 350- to 700-word policy for my staff that encompasses each of the aforementioned accrediting bodies. My policy draft should incorporate aspects of the questions I answered in Part I.

Policy Draft

In order to ensure that our prison inmates co-exist in as safe and as healthy environment as possible, we will offer as clean environment as possible, access to palatable food, zero- tolerance towards violence or gang formation, rehabilitation programs, zero-tolerance towards PRISON ASSIGNMENT 4 prison rape, access to proper healthcare, to live as comfortably as seen as reasonably fit by our tax paying Americans and the opportunities for the prisoners to improve themselves through schooling and/or through work programs in the prison.

We as a staff can facilitate these initiatives by attempting and making every effort to be kind and courteous to all of the prisoners and also having extensive knowledge of the sometimes difficult upbringings that many of these prisoners have had, plus hard times in adulthood that have brought them to what is often deemed as a grim place to be. We should have extensive knowledge of mental health knowledge and bereavement issues in order to work with our prison populations. As well we should make every effort to treat the prisoners with respect despite the wrong-doings they have done. Prisons are called correctional facilities for a reason and this is our roles as correctional staff – to aim at all times to try to correct their behavior as well as to applaud them when the prisoners have been on good behavior.

Conclusion

This essay has discussed the issues of correctional facilities in America.
