Education for Youth Experiencing Homelessness Awareness Week October 28- November 1, 2013

Feel free to implement one or more activities as well as design your own activity.

REMEMBER: ANY funds, donations, etc. raised/collected will remain IN THE DISTRICT to be utilized for students experiencing homelessness. If you have an overabundance of school supplies and you wish to share, please let me know.

Ideas for Schools:

Have student council participate and implement activities. Talk with PTO to assist with planning and implementing. Make morning announcements with a statistic about homelessness. Read a book about homelessness to the class (we have several we can share). o Have book read by certain day and then have students draw a picture of what they learned. Allow students to pay $1 (or less) so they can wear a hat to school. Coordinate school staff dress down day (this would work great with Red Shirt day on Friday, November 1, 2013). Have drama club do a skit on homelessness. Record and upload to ECYEH facebook page. School buildings/district can have a contest to determine the most “Liked” skit based on number of hits on ECYEH Facebook page. If there are multiple school districts participating in this activity, we will let all entities know. Designate a walking path/area on which students can post visuals such as posters/signs with statistical information related to homelessness. Ask area businesses to participate in Red Shirt Day. ECYEH can provide homeless awareness information if needed. Coordinate a Poem Contest, Art Contest, and/or Penny Wars. Coordinate a backpack drive - fill a backpack with school supplies. Coordinate a gift card drive - grocery stores, Walmart, Target, gas stations. Allow students to create awareness posters/signs to utilize for a photo shoot. Pictures can be taken individually or as a group by school personnel and uploaded to the ECYEH Facebook page.

Please let Sonia Pitzi, Regional Coordinator, know what activities you will be implementing in your district no later than Friday, October 25, 2013.
