Name:______Block:_____ Romeo and Juliet – Act 5 Questions

Act 5, Scene 1 (pages 224 to 230)  Setting: a street in Mantua  Balthazar, Romeo’s servant, arrives in Mantua. Romeo is expecting to receive good news from him about Juliet and his family.  Balthazar then tells Romeo that is not the case as Juliet lies in the Capulet family tomb – dead. This is obviously not the news Romeo is expecting to hear, and he is devastated. Romeo asks Balthazar one more time if he has a letter for him from Friar Lawrence, and Balthazar says he does not. Romeo tells Balthazar to prepare to head back to Verona. As Balthazar leaves, Romeo decides that he will lie with Juliet tonight, thus he is planning to see Juliet one more time and then kill himself.  Romeo goes to an Apothecary (druggist) and buys poison from him. The Apothecary refuses at first because he can be put to death if he is caught selling illegal drugs. However, the Apothecary is poor, and Romeo offers him money. The Apothecary gives Romeo the poison and tells him that the poison will kill him almost immediately, even if he had the strength of twenty men.  Romeo takes the poison, and he heads back to Verona, promising to use the poison at Juliet’s grave.

Act 5, Scene 2 (pages 230 to 232)  Setting: Friar Lawrence’s cell  Friar John arrives at Friar Lawrence’s cell, so Friar Lawrence assumes that Friar John delivered the letter to Romeo detailing the plan for Juliet to fake her death and that Romeo is to meet her so they can run away and be happy.  Unfortunately, Friar John reports that Romeo did not receive the letter. Friar John was traveling with a friend and visiting someone who was sick. The health officials in the town thought the sick man had the plague, so they set up a quarantine – no one could get into the town and no one could leave the town. Thus, Friar John was stuck in the town and could not deliver the letter as planned.  Friar Lawrence sends another letter, has Friar John goes to get him a crowbar, and is headed to the Capulet tomb to remove Juliet, because she is going to wake up in the next three hours.

Act 5, Scene 3 (pages 232 to 256) 1.
