Tips to Reduce Your Air Conditioning Bills

TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR AIR CONDITIONING BILLS

Source: Sue Badenhop

Tightening up your home will reduce cooling costs and keep your family more comfortable in the coming months. There are some simple, relatively inexpensive steps you can take to lower air conditioning bills. Check attic insulation. A one-time investment in insulation can pay you back in energy savings in two to three years, or even less time. Insulation is rated in R units, for resistance for heat transfer. In Kentucky, R-49 is recommended for attics. It=s also a good idea to insulate under floors above crawl spaces with R-19 insulation and walls between air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned areas such as a garage with R-18. Since warm air is less dense than cool air, leaks allow cooler air to move outside when it=s warmer outside than in your home. Adding new weatherstripping and caulking around doors and windows can help reduce your energy bill by up to 20 percent. A portion of your summer cooling bill, up to 15 percent, is caused by heat entering through windows. This puts a load on the cooling system that keeps it running. One solution is to use summer window film to prevent heat from entering your home. The most energy-efficient insulating films can reflect up to 70 percent of the sun=s energy outside. Properly seal leaks in the duct system to boost the efficiency of your cooling system and lower air conditioning bills. Another way to cut cooling costs is to regularly change the air filters in the cooling and heating system. This simple, inexpensive step also will aid your family=s overall health. Using ceiling fans can help lower your cooling bills. In the summer, moving air gives a Awind chill@ effect. Thus, you can set the thermostat at a higher temperature, yet still have a cool feeling. For example, using a ceiling fan, you can set the thermostat at 80 degrees and it will feel like 72 degrees in the room.
