<p>For Students Engineering Design in Oregon Science Classrooms Page 1 of 2 Word Alert! The Word Alert is intended to be a fast, effective way to assess students’ understanding of key terms and concepts for this lesson. It can be used both as a “Before Reading” and as an “After Reading” evaluation to document change in understanding. The “Picture” section can alternatively be labeled “Notes,” depending on grade level. Similarly, the boxes under Picture will need to be larger for lower grades.</p><p>The vocabulary found here corresponds to the vocabulary found in Section 2.1 of the Teacher’s Guide. We recommend that the vocabulary included below be included in your lesson, as they are integral terms to the EDP. If the lesson is intended for lower elementary grades, you may want to drop words like “constrain,” however. You should add additional words below based on the science content covered by your lesson. For lower grades you should probably simplify the instructions and/or read the instructions aloud. Before the Reading The words below are important for today’s activity. Before we start, rank the words based on how well you already know them using the following scale: 1 — I have never heard of this word before now. 2 — I recognize this word, but I don’t know what it means. 3 — I sort-of know what this word means, but I would have a hard time coming up with a definition. 4 — I can give you a definition for this word and use it in a sentence. After the Reading Rank the words again after you read the article. In the column labeled “Picture,” draw or write something that reminds you of the word’s meaning.
