<p> Chemistry 1 CP Darlington High School Instructor: Mr. Philip Barr Room: 287</p><p>Course Description: The Chemistry I course Chemistry I CP is a class designed to prepare high school students for their college chemistry courses. Chemistry is the study of the composition of substances and the changes that substances undergo. Chemistry contributes to other natural sciences including Biology, Geology and Physics. Chemistry is used with agriculture, medicine and many manufacturing industries as well. </p><p>Course Content: 1. Lab Safety, First Aid and Equipment 9. Chemical Quantities and Moles</p><p>2. Scientific Measurement and Methods 10. Stoichiometry</p><p>3. Atomic Structure 11. Gases and Kinetic Theory</p><p>4. Isotopes and Nuclear Chemistry 12. Solutions</p><p>5. The Periodic Table 13. Acids and Bases</p><p>6. Electron Configurations 14. Equilibrium and Kinetics</p><p>7. Covalent and Ionic Bonding 15. Thermochemistry</p><p>8. Chemical Reactions 16. Organic Chemistry</p><p>Textbook: Prentice Hall Chemistry </p><p>Contact: Phone: (843) 398 –2788 E-mail: [email protected]</p><p>Supplies: A 3-ringed Binder, ink pen and calculator will be needed.</p><p>Classroom Policies and Procedures</p><p>Classroom Discipline Policy: All students are entitled to a safe and orderly environment in which they can learn. All students will be held accountable for his or her actions. The following is a list of guidelines, consequences, and rewards that will be adhered to.</p><p>Classroom Guidelines: </p><p>1. Always be respectful. (To me, To your classmates, To school property)</p><p>2. Always follow directions.</p><p>3. Obey all DHS policies and procedures.</p><p>Consequences:</p><p>1. 1st Offense = Warning</p><p>2. 2nd Offense = Conference with Student (30 seconds after class)</p><p>3. 3rd Offense = Lunch detention</p><p>4. 4th Offense = Phone call home</p><p>5. 5th Offense = Discipline Referral</p><p>Incentives:</p><p>1. Sense of Personal Pride</p><p>2. Praise from teacher! Pleasure of knowing you are doing something great! 3. Good news letters or phone calls home</p><p>4. Falcon Pride Referral at instructors discretion </p><p>Classroom Procedures:</p><p>Tardies: Be in the classroom heading toward your seat when the bell rings. Running down the hall as the bell is ringing will be considered tardy. If you are tardy, you will have to get a pass from an administrator or campus supervisor. </p><p>Assignments:</p><p> Students are expected to begin bellwork immediately upon entering the classroom. Bellwork will be taken up every week and will be counted as a quiz grade.</p><p> Classwork will be put in the labeled box on my desk.</p><p> Late assignments will be accepted with severe penalty to the grade.</p><p> Cheating on any assignment will not be tolerated and will result in a zero.</p><p>Materials: Bring your Macbook and a pen/pencil and binder every day. You may not leave your notebook in class</p><p>Remain Seated once class begins and Raise Your Hand to be called on when you need to speak</p><p> Pencils will be sharpened before the lesson begins. If you have to sharpen your pencil during instruction time, raise your pencil and I will give you a hand sharpener or pencil to use.</p><p> Trash accumulated during class can be put on the corner of your table. If I don’t pick it up for you, you may put it in the trash can on your way out of class. </p><p>Restroom: After the bell rings to begin class, no student will be allowed to go to the restroom until bellwork is completed, or during lecture and note-taking sessions.</p><p>Be Neat, Be Clean, Be Safe: Clean up after yourself in the classroom and in lab. Keep table-tops and walkways uncluttered. Follow all laboratory safety procedures. (No food, drinks are allowed only in bottles with lids)</p><p>End of Class:</p><p> The last two minutes of class will be used to give any make – up work, conference with students, or answer any questions not related to the day’s lesson.</p><p> No students will be allowed to leave when the bell rings until all students are in their seats. No standing at the door.</p><p>Evaluation</p><p>The DHS Science Department grades assignments using a straight points scale. Each assignment is worth so many points. </p><p>The computer averages you grade using the following formula: Average = total points earned / total points possible x 100</p><p>Assignment Point Value Assignment Point Value</p><p>Homework 5 Points/assignment Tests 100 Points</p><p>Class work 15 Points/ assignment Labs 75 Points</p><p>Quizzes 25 Points Class Notebooks 100 points/ per Quarter Tests 100 Points Projects 100 points</p><p>Labs 75 Points Bonus/Extra Credit 0 points (TBD)</p><p>The Darlington County School District’s Grade Scale will be used:</p><p>100-90 = A</p><p>89-80 = B</p><p>79-70 = C</p><p>69-60 = D</p><p>59-0 = F</p><p>Please sign acknowledging that you have fully read this document!!
