The expression “pull up your socks” usually means to get to work or to start making an effort where you were not before. What significance do you see in Mama’s line on page 149 “Beneatha, what’s the matter with them stockings? Pull them things up, girl…” (3 points)</p><p>5. What passage do you think is the most important in Act III? Clearly identify the passage by giving the speaker and page number, and then explain why this passage is important to the book. Beneatha refers to colonialism in Africa, where for more than 300 years the native people were controlled by colonial governments in Europe.</p><p>Metaphor: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them (as in drowning in money).</p><p>OUTCOMES: 4.5- articulate their understanding of the author’s purpose in relation to the impact of literary devices. 6.3- make connections among the themes, issues, and ideas expressed in texts 6.5- justify points of view on various texts </p>
