In this article the researchers looked for a correlation between Internet and video games use and overweight teens. The design they used was a postal survey where participants answered questions related to their weekly Internet use. According to Melchior et al (2014), they noticed the answers differed based on the participants living situation, social isolation, education level, sex, and parental overweight. The results were over 20% of the participants engaged in regular use of the Internet or video games and were overnight (Melchior et al, 2014). Also, the overweight participants had little to no physical activity or parent history of overweight. In their conclusion video game use and the Internet appeared to be associated with overweight teens. 3 Personal Health and Wellness Article Critique

This article I read was about poor health habits and things that cause those habits. A lot of material discussed in the article was closely related to the things we learned in class. Two of the dimensions of wellness were physical and environment. In this study participants played games or used the Internet more than they were physically active. That played a factor in why they were or became obese. Also, many obese participants came from low-income homes, therefore not having the proper means to have a healthy lifestyle. In addition to environment wellness, their parents were obese which then plays a role in their eating habits. If you don’t the proper influences around you, then you could be steered in the wrong direction.

After reading this article I have developed a deeper love for my major. I think it’s interesting how people do research on health related topics and how they can correlate bad habits to poor health. I’m stuck between becoming a physical therapist or a health educator. When I say health educator I mean health teacher in a middle school or a physical education teacher. I want my career to deal with educating the youth on health risks. I want to promote good health. I didn’t have that positive influence when I was younger, and I feel it is one of the many reasons why I grew up overweight. So after reading this article, it has made me even more want my career to revolve around educating the youth on health issues.

From this article I learned of many more factors that can lead to a bad lifestyle. Your habits or the habits around you can lead you into a down spiral of bad health choices. I have already been changing my bad health habits, and it was interesting to read this article because I had the same issue growing up. I would spend hours on the Internet or watching TV, and I didn’t get into much physical activities or sports. Also, I didn’t have positive influences around me. I [Type text] [Type text] [Type text] 4 learned my bad eating habits from my parents and older siblings. So reading this article further teaches me of all the ways your health can be influenced.

In the article they touched on social isolation being a cause for obesity. I wanted to know if that is the main factor when it comes to Internet use and video games in obese children. When using the Internet and video games you are cutting off your interaction with society. I have read other articles that blame obesity on lack of social interaction alone. Kids and young adults who spend most of their time in the house on the computer rather than going out with friends are more likely to have bad health habits. So I feel like this confuses me but raises a question at the same time. Is technology the reason for obesity in young adults or is the lack of social interaction the real cause? 5 Personal Health and Wellness Article Critique Citation

Melchior, M, Chollet, A, et al.
