Yes, international data usage is VERY EXPENSIVE. It’s a flat rate of $0.0195/KB in all countries except Canada ($0.015/KB). This is equivalent of ~$20.00/MB. As an example; if you use an air card for data service while overseas and you receive a 6 MB PowerPoint file via e-mail, edit it, and resend it, that becomes a $240.00 transaction (12MB x $20/MB). Are there any ways to avoid international data charges? Yes. If you are staying in a hotel that has WIFI or a hard Internet connection, it is far less expensive to pay the daily rate that the hotel charges for Internet service instead of using your air card. Use your air card on a limited basis or for emergencies only. Additionally, whenever possible, read and reply to e-mails on your PDA, not your laptop utilizing an air card. Are SMS and MMS (Multimedia) text messages included in the data plan? No. The cost depends on which carrier (AT&T or Verizon) AND whether it’s done domestically or internationally.  AT&T units with a data plan (BlackBerry devices, iPhones) receive 200 free domestic text (SMS) messages per month before charges are incurred o AT&T domestic SMS (after 200) and MMS messages: $0.10 each o Domestic to international SMS: $0.25 each o Domestic to international MMS: $0.50 each o International SMS: $0.50 each o International MMS: $1.30 each

Information Technology & Communications Division Page 1 of 3 Wireless Data Usage (International and Domestic) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) May 2, 2011

 Verizon units with a data plan (BlackBerry devices, iPhones) receive unlimited domestic text (SMS) messages o Domestic MMS messages: $0.25 each. o Domestic to international SMS: $0.25 each o Domestic to international MMS: $0.50 each o International SMS: $0.25 each o International MMS: $0.50 each Does it cost more to send the same international SMS or MMS message at the same time to multiple users? Yes, these costs are multiplied by the number of recipients. SMS and MMS messages sent from overseas ALSO incur a data charge. For example, an MMS message containing a 1 MB photo taken with an iPhone sent from France to 10 recipients in the US costs ~$33.00 (10 x $1.30 for the messages, plus $20 for the data usage). Is it expensive to make an international phone call? Yes, it can be, based on frequency of use and location. International voice service costs vary widely depending on the country being dialed and from where the call originates. In general, calls FROM the US to other countries are less expensive than calls placed overseas.  Calls placed from the US to overseas vary from $0.09/minute to over $4.00/minute.  Calls placed outside the US vary from $1.39/minute to over $5.00/minute. What type of service plan agreements does ODIN provide for your IT equipment? ODIN provides PDAs, air cards (including MiFi units), iPads, and cell phones with service plan agreements that provide for:  Agency-wide pooled voice minutes within the continental United States (this essentially provides for unlimited voice minutes in the US)  Unlimited data usage within the continental United States (not applicable on cell phones)  International service capability, if selected  Tethering capability, if selected Other services will incur additional charges, which are billed back to NASA with no markup from ODIN.  Domestic to International calls

Information Technology & Communications Division Page 2 of 3 Wireless Data Usage (International and Domestic) Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) May 2, 2011

 International to Domestic calls  International to International calls  International data usage  Sending and receiving SMS (Text) Messages  Sending and receiving MMS (Multimedia) Messages  Directory assistance (“411”) = $2.00/instance

Information Technology & Communications Division Page 3 of 3
