Newbury Ladies League Hockey

Newbury Ladies League Hockey. (Later to become Newbury/Thatcham).

Season 1987-88. League hockey first came to Newbury in the 1987-88 season when the Berks, Bucks and Oxon (BBO) League was formed for first XIs. It consisted of 3 Divisions, each containing 10 teams, playing each other once only. Based upon the past records of clubs, the very first League Committee made the initial selection of clubs to leagues. This Committee consisted of Amy Beasley, Pam Robinson, Evelyn Dawtry, Beryl Dann, Delta Clarke and Jacky Goodgame, with sponsorship at that time from Radley Windows. Each club had a representative to this Committee with Newbury’s being Agnes Carlisle. Newbury was selected for Division 2 as seen in the table below -

BBO League for 1987-88 (with final League positions)

BBO Division 1 Pos BBO Division 2 Pos BBO Division 3 Pos Aylesbury 10 Adastral (Oxford) 9 Aldermaston 5 Henley 8 Buckingham 4 Bicester 8 Maidenhead 5 City of Oxford 10 Brill 10 Marlow 9 Holmer Green (Wycombe) 8 Gerrards Cross 3 Milton Keynes 6 Newbury 5 Harlow (Wycombe) 6 Oxford Etceteras 4 Oxford University 1 Headington (Oxford) 4 Pressed Steel Fisher (Oxford) 1 Reading 2 Morris Motors (Oxford) 1 Ranelagh (Reading) 7 Wallingford 7 Phoenix (Reading) 9 West Witney 2 Wokingham 3 Pilgrims (Oxford) 7 Windsor 3 Wycombe Rye 6 Sonning 2

In this same season, a South Clubs’ League was formed to sit above the BBO League and the other similar leagues formed in Hampshire, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex. The South League is the one to which the Division 1 clubs of the County leagues should aspire. Initially it was formed with 8 clubs, 6 by invitation identified on the basis of 5 or 6 appearances in the quarter-finals of the South Clubs Championship since 1980. These 6 were Chelsea, Ealing, Portsmouth, Royal Ascot, Slough and Wimbledon. The other two clubs were found after play-offs between 8 invited clubs, one from each county (but 2 from Middlesex, identified as the strongest county), but I have not been able to identify the winning pair from these play-offs.

Newbury’s record, as shown below, at the end of this first League season, was satisfactory rather than outstanding. In those days, when there was a 2-player offside rule, goals were at a premium. That is why a win was worth 4 points, a score draw (sD) 2 points and a no-score draw (nsD) 1 point. As League hockey was in its first season as an experiment, games between clubs were played once only, and not yet on a home and away basis.

Pos Club P W sD nsD L F A Pts Result 1 Oxford University 9 6 1 0 2 40 8 26 D 1-1 (H) 2 Reading 9 6 0 2 1 24 9 26 D 0-0 (A) 3 Wokingham 9 6 1 0 2 28 8 26 D 1-1 (A) 4 Buckingham 9 5 1 0 3 18 10 22 D 1-1 (H) 5 Newbury 9 3 3 2 1 20 10 20 6 Wycombe Rye 9 3 1 2 3 34 14 16 D 0-0 (H) 7 Wallingford 9 2 3 0 4 13 13 14 L 0-1 (H) 8 Holmer Green 9 2 1 0 6 17 9 10 W 3-1 (A) 9 Adastral 9 1 2 0 6 9 17 8 W 1-0 (A) 10 City of Oxford 9 1 1 0 7 16 26 6 W 1-0 (H)

1 Brill resigned from Division 3 before the season started.

At the end of this first season, Pressed Steel Fisher and West Witney were promoted to the South League; Oxford University, Reading and Wokingham to Division 1; and Gerrards Cross, Morris Motors and Sonning to Division 2. The only relegations were Aylesbury to Division 2 and City of Oxford to Division 3.

To show how the game has progressed over recent years, I quote from the handbook for 1987-88 - “All matches shall be played on grass unless by mutual consent. Earliest possible notice of the intention to play on other than grass shall be given to their opponents by the home club.”

The introduction of League hockey brought more enthusiasm and interest in the game amongst both players and administrators and, with it, a desire to make it more popular. This encouraged the Hockey Board to review the rules of the game regularly.

Season 1988-89. At the beginning of this season, the South League was extended to two Divisions, the first Division of 8 teams and the second of 10 teams. In a play-off, Pressed Steel went immediately from winning the BBO League into South League 1.

A BBO ruling this season stated that umpires for League matches must be qualified. Other new rules were that upto 24 players can be registered per club and that they could not play until 14 days after registration.

Compensating for the two promotions to the South League, and the resignation of Brill from BBO Division 3, was the acceptance of three new clubs, namely Banbury, Farnham Common and Westminster College (Oxford), all going into Division 3.

BBO League for 1st XIs 1988-89 (with final League positions)

BBO Division 1 Pos BBO Division 2 Pos BBO Division 3 Pos Henley 5 Adastral 5 Aldermaston 3 Maidenhead 8 Aylesbury 9 Banbury 1 Marlow 4 Buckingham 4 Bicester 8 Milton Keynes 9 Gerrards Cross 10 City of Oxford 6 Oxford Etceteras 6 Holmer Green 8 Farnham Common 4 Oxford University 10 Morris Motors 6 Harlow 9 Ranelagh 7 Newbury 1 Headington 2 Reading 1 Sonning 7 Phoenix 7 Windsor 2 Wallingford 3 Pilgrims 5 Wokingham 3 Wycombe Rye 2 Westminster College 10

After only two seasons, Newbury, with captain Sally Harris, won Division 2 of the BBO League, as shown in the following table.

2 BBO League Division 2 1988-89

Pos Club P W sD nsD L F A Pts Result 1 Newbury 9 7 1 0 1 12 3 30 2 Wycombe Rye 9 7 0 1 1 19 5 29 W 1-0 (A) 3 Wallingford 9 6 1 0 2 17 12 26 D 1-1 (A) 4 Buckingham 9 5 1 0 3 15 7 22 W 1-0 (A) 5 Adastral 9 3 2 1 3 8 9 17 L 0-1 (H) 6 Morris Motors 9 3 1 1 4 6 13 15 D 0-0 (H) 7 Sonning 9 2 2 1 4 10 8 13 W 2-1 (H) 8 Holmer Green 9 2 1 2 4 4 14 12 W 5-0 (H) 9 Aylesbury 9 0 3 0 6 5 16 6 W 2-0 (A) 10 Gerrards Cross 9 1 0 0 8 4 13 4 W 3-0*

When a game is conceded, the result is shown as W 3-0* or L 0-3*.

Season 1989-90. As a consequence, Reading was promoted from the BBO Division 1 to South Division 2 before the start of the season.

Playing in Division 1 of the BBO League, still with captain Sally Harris, Newbury were immediately successful with a record of P9 W6 D2 L1 F11 A3, as shown in the following table. The only defeat was against Slough 0-4(A).

Season 1991-92. Unfortunately, the League was without a sponsor this season.

A major change to the structure of the BBO League in that the two separate Leagues for first and second XI teams were merged into one League of six Divisions each of 10 teams. This enabled more Clubs to enter the League and to have more than two teams. This is thus an appropriate time to list the complete League structure as it was at the beginning of the 1991/1992 season. Prior to the start of the season, two of the Oxford clubs, Adastral and Etceteras, merged to form Oxford Hawks; this left Division 2 with only 9 teams.

BBO League for 1991-92

BBO Division 1 BBO Division 2 BBO Division 3 City of Oxford Aldermaston Aylesbury Farnham Common Banbury Bracknell 2 Henley Buckingham Harlow Milton Keynes Harwell Headington Newbury Maidenhead Holmer Green Ranelagh Morris Motors Reading University Sonning Oxford Hawks Richings Park West Witney Oxford University RMCS Shrivenham Windsor Phoenix Wallingford Wokingham West Witney 2

4 BBO Division 4 BBO Division 5 BBO Division 6 Bicester Henley 2 Buckingham 2 Boyne Hill Holmer Green 2 City of Oxford 2 Gerrards Cross Morris Motors 2 Farnham Common 2 Maidenhead 2 Newbury 2 Harwell 2 Marlow 2 Oxford University 2 Headington 2 Milton Keynes 2 Pressed Steel 2 Ibis Oxford Hawks 2 Slough 2 Little Chalfont Pilgrims Sonning 2 Phoenix 2 Reading 2 Windsor 2 Ranelagh 2 Wokingham 2 Wycombe Rye 2 Scarlet Runners

Newbury’s first XI (captain Sally Harris) were again second in Division 1 with a record of P9 W4 D3 L2 F14 A8, behind West Witney, the team that had been relegated from the South League at the end of last season.

The second XI (captain Agnes Carlisle) with a record of P9 W4 D1 L4 F6 A6 finished in the top half of Division 5.

The table below gives the final League positions and the results of the Newbury teams against each opposition for season 1991-1992.

Pos BBO Division 1 Result BBO Division 5 Result 1 West Witney L 0-4 (H) Slough 2 L 0-1 (H) 2 Newbury Sonning 2 L 0-1 (H) 3 Wokingham D 0-0 (H) Pressed Steel 2 W 3-0 (A) 4 Windsor D 1-1 (A) Newbury 2 5 Milton Keynes L 0-1 (A) Holmer Green 2 L 0-2 (A) 6 Sonning W 1-0 (H) Windsor 2 W 1-0 (H) 7 Ranelagh D 1-1 (H) Morris Motors 2 W 1-0 (H) 8 Henley W 3-0 (A) Oxford University 2 L 0-2 (H) 9 Farnham Common W 1-0 (H) Wycombe Rye 2 D 0-0 (H) 10 City of Oxford W 7-1 (H) Henley 2 W 1-0 (A)

West Witney will rejoin the South League next season after just one season’s absence from that League.

Season 1992-93 (40th Anniversary of Newbury Hockey Club). The League now had a new sponsor in “Mud, Sweat and Tears Ltd” of Crowthorne, suppliers of Gryphon hockey sticks.

With more clubs realising that League hockey was going to be the way forward, many clubs were introducing more teams and so all Divisions were made larger. New teams entering were Harlow 2, Maidenhead Mascots and Oxford Hawks 3, all in Division 5, and Reading 2, Milton Keynes 2A, Bracknell 3, Wokingham 3 and West Witney 3, all in Division 6. However there were three resignations: Reading University from Division 3, Bicester from Division 4, and Ibis from Division 6.

5 For the fourth consecutive year, Newbury (captain Sally Harris) finished in second position in the top Division, this time to Oxford Hawks. The record was P10 W7 D1 L2 F16 A6. Wins were against Wokingham 1-0(A), Buckingham 4-0(H), Sonning 1-0(A), Henley 3-1(A), Harwell 1-0(A), Milton Keynes 2-1(A) and Windsor 3-0(H), the draw with Ranelagh 0-0(H) and the defeats by Oxford Hawks 0-2(H) and Farnham Common 0-1(A).

In Division 4, the record for the second XI (captain Alison Ayto) was P11 W6 D2 L3 F17 A5. The two walk-overs did give the analysis an inflated look about it.

Season 1993-94. Both Newbury captains were retained from last season, this being the third consecutive and fifth time in six years, for Sally Harris. Again the size of the Divisions was increased, some to 13 and others to 14 but with the complete removal of Division 6. New teams entering the League were three teams from Amersham and one each from Abingdon and Iver Heath; and both Phoenix and Sonning entered a third XI. There were also three departures, namely Little Chalfont from Division 5 and both teams from Holmer Green in Divisions 2 and 4. With such changes, it is worth while giving another complete Division structure -

BBO Division 1 BBO Division 2 BBO Division 3 BBO Division 4 BBO Division 5 Aldermaston Amersham Farnham Common 2 Amersham 2 Abingdon Bracknell 2 Banbury Gerrards Cross Bracknell 3 Amersham 3 Buckingham Boyne Hill Maidenhead 2 City of Oxford 2 Aylesbury Farnham Common City of Oxford Newbury 2 Harwell 2 Buckingham 2 Henley Harlow Phoenix Headington 2 Harlow 2 Maidenhead Harwell Pressed Steel 2 Henley 2 Iver Heath Milton Keynes Headington Ranelagh 2 Maidenhead Mascots Marlow 3 Newbury Milton Keynes 2 Richings Park Marlow 2 Milton Keynes 2a Oxford Hawks Morris Motors RMCS Shrivenham Morris Motors 2 Oxford University 2 Ranelagh Oxford Hawks 1a Sonning 2 Phoenix 2 Phoenix 3 Sonning Oxford University Wallingford Pilgrims Scarlet Runners West Witney 2 Reading 1a Wokingham 2 Oxford Hawks 2 Sonning 3 Windsor Slough 2 Wycombe Rye 2 Reading 2 West Witney 3 Wokingham Windsor 2 Wokingham 3

The record for the first XI, still in Division 1, was P13 W8 D3 L2 F32 A9. Unlike the success of the first XI, these second XI results meant relegation to Division 4 next season.

6 Season 1994-95. With Marlow returning to the BBO League from the South League, this season, in theory, became the first time that two teams should be relegated from each Division but only one promoted. In practice, as in most seasons, some teams withdraw from the League, and others may enter, albeit into the bottom Division. In particular, after this season, the Morris Motors club with teams in Divisions 2 and 4 departed and Windsor reduced their Club to one team. On the other hand, three new teams entered Division 5, namely Chalfont St Peter, Gerrards Cross 2 and Reading 2a. Marlow almost faced the ignominy of dropping down yet another Division.

The complete Division 1 league table at the end of the season for Newbury’s first XI (captain Athene Richards) is given below, with all the usual columns, but also a further final column giving the result of Newbury’s game against each of the opponents -

Pos Club P W D L F A Pts Result 1 Maidenhead 13 11 0 2 40 8 33 L 0-2(H) 2 Milton Keynes 13 9 2 2 24 9 29 D 0-0(A) 3 Oxford Hawks 13 8 3 2 28 8 27 D 0-0(H) 4 Wokingham 13 8 3 2 18 10 27 L 0-1(A) 5 Oxford University 13 7 4 2 20 10 25 L 0-1(H) 6 Bracknell 1a 13 6 3 4 34 14 21 D 1-1(A) 7 Ranelagh 13 5 3 5 13 13 18 D 0-0(H) 8 Newbury 13 4 5 4 17 9 17 9 Sonning 13 4 1 8 9 17 13 W 3-0(H) 10 Farnham Common 13 4 1 8 16 26 13 W 3-0(H) 11 Henley 13 3 3 7 14 19 12 D 1-1(A) 12 Marlow 13 3 1 9 10 29 10 L 0-1(A) 13 Buckingham 13 3 1 9 16 38 10 W 5-2(A) 14 Aldermaston 13 0 2 11 5 54 0* W 4-0(A)

An asterisk in the “Pts” column means that the club conceded a game and was deducted 2 points; the most common reasons for this was either that the club could not raise a team for the scheduled date, or that their nominated umpire (if there was one!) was not qualified. This meant that the vast majority of players remaining in the Club were selected for a team higher than should be expected. Consequently the first three teams are, in theory, all relegated and the 4th team may well not exist for the new season. The 1st team, however, will remain in an extended South League Division 3A.

Season 2008 - 2009. The changes to South Division 3A were - promotion of Teddington 1 to Division 2 and the additions of Teddington 2 from Middlesex and both Oxford Hawks 2 and City of Oxford 1 from the BBO Premier 1 Division, now giving a league of 12 teams.

Could it get worse for Newbury/Thatcham?
