<p>Central Michigan University ● EHS 459 ● Web: gems.cmich.edu ● Email: [email protected]</p><p>GEMS Spring 2016 WORKSHOPS</p><p>Invisible Universe Friday, January 29, 2016 ● (Grades -) In an investigation of the electromagnetic spectrum students examine wave motion, then face challenges at “invisible energy” stations, EHS 129 including infrared (TV remote); radio; ultraviolet (black light) and 1:00-4:00 pm others. They learn that these have become powerful tools in Cost: $5.00 astronomy. Students are also introduced to Gamma Ray Bursts and Guide Cost: FREE ponder the most powerful explosions in the Universe. Many color images are included in the “Tour of the Universe.” Early Adventures Friday, February 12, 2016 ● (Grades 1-2) EHS 129 in Designed to build a foundation in algebraic thinking for students in the early primary grades. Explore the ties between the English/Language Arts Cost: $5.00 3. and Science Common Core Standards by doing a variety of Guide Cost: FREE investigations.</p><p>Treasure Boxes Friday, April 8, 2016 ● (Grades K-3) From postage stamps to bottle caps, a child's precious collections are EHS 129 natural starting points for guided exploration and mathematic activities, 1:00-4:00 pm and can galvanize discussion of environmental concepts. In this Cost: $5.00 engaging, innovative series of mathematics activities, children create Guide Cost: FREE personal collections of recycled, "found," and inexpensive objects and investigate their properties, calling many important science and math skills into play. Moons of Jupiter Friday, April 22, 2016 ● (Grades 4-8) 1. Observing and recording moon orbits over time, students reenact EHS 129 1. Galileo’s historic telescopic study of Jupiter’s moons and learn why his 1:00-4:00 pm observations contributed to the birth of modern astronomy. Students Cost: $5.00 experiment with craters, create scale models, and take a tour of the Guide Cost: FREE Jupiter system.</p>
