Tapestry for the Holidays

Small Group Ministry Group Session Plan Tapestry for the Holidays

Opening Words “Let Christmas Come”, words by John Hanley Morgan, #224 Singing the Living Tradition

Let Christmas come, its story told, Let Christmas come, its great star glow When days are short and winds are cold; On quiet city, parks of snow; Let Christmas come, its lovely song, Let Christmas come, its table gleam When evening’s soon and night is long. Love born again; the truth of dream.

Check In/Sharing

Topic/Activity Life is a tapestry woven by people and events, a tapestry especially vivid in the holiday season. The memories of who has been part of our Christmases, who is no longer present, and anticipation of who will be part of celebrations this year are the patterns. The little things that we do individually and with others, the traditions that have come and gone, and those that remain add the colors. The gifts that we have received and those that we have given add the hues and brightness. What will you be adding to your tapestry this year?

1. Share a Christmas that was particularly meaningful. How have Christmases changed for you over the years? How have they remained the same? 2. Tell of a gift that you have given or received that remains with you or in your memory. Why is that meaningful? 3. What are you anticipating for Christmas this year? What do you need or want during this holiday season?

Likes and Wishes/Check out. How was this session for you?

Closing Words Excerpt From “A Christmas Prayer” by M. Maureen Killoran, UUA Worship Web, REACH Fall 2001

Not gold, nor myrrh, nor even frankincense would I have for you this season, but simple gifts, the ones that are hardest to find, the ones that are perfect, even for those who have everything (if such there be). the gift of courage, the gift of connection, the gift of community.

©, Unitarian Universalist Community Church, Augusta, ME, Later Life Series, Nov. 2011
