UNOFFICIAL COPY AS OF 04/03/18 11 REG. SESS. 11 RS BR 1772

A RESOLUTION honoring IBM upon its 100th anniversary. WHEREAS, on June 16, 2011, International Business Machines (IBM) will celebrate its 100-year anniversary, a feat which is unmatched in the world of business and technology. While countless corporations, political groups, technologies, economic upheavals, and scientific disciplines have risen and disappeared throughout the decades, IBM has persevered. The company's insights are critical to America's rising leaders who are charting their paths to a more global and competitive world; and WHEREAS, IBM is reflecting on progress over the last century through three lenses: pioneering the science of information, changing the way the world works, and reinventing the modern corporation; and WHEREAS, IBM's long-term view of leadership development and talent management has helped the company affect positive changes within business and society. IBM has pioneered many of the managed practices of 20th century business, from diversity and accessibility, to cross-cultural adaptability, to training managers on a massive scale; and WHEREAS, IBM has a long and rich history of serving the United States government. This partnership dates to the early 1900s, when IBM pioneered a cutting- edge technology to sort census results faster than human clerks for the United States Census Bureau; and

WHEREAS, today, IBM is continuing to shape the way the world works. The company is investing $6 billion annually in research and development, and its more than 400,000 global employees are developing the practices and discoveries that are creating a "smarter planet." IBM is working with federal agencies and local governments to streamline and connect operations and citizens services using cloud computing and to detect waste, fraud, and abuse using analytics. These tools and best practices are increasing efficiencies and saving money at a time when governments are expected to do more with less; and

Page 1 of 2 BR177200.100 - 1772 - 5597 Jacketed UNOFFICIAL COPY AS OF 04/03/18 11 REG. These efforts include reducing traffic congestion and resulting air pollution; digitizing health records to improve patient care; improving access to and quality of education; enhancing surveillance systems to reduce crime rates; sourcing and managing power more intelligently; and improving the quality, supply, and access to water; and WHEREAS, IBM reached another milestone this year. In February, the company unveiled "Watson," an analytical machine that rivals a human's ability to answer questions posed in natural language with speed, accuracy, and confidence. Watson made its debut as the first non-human contestant to appear on Jeopardy! when it competed with all-time champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. IBM is exploring ways to apply this technology for health care diagnoses, drug interactions, prior case law searches for judges and lawyers, "what if" scenarios and regulatory compliance, and smarter sales forces for companies; NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate honors IBM upon its 100th anniversary and commends its management, its employees, and the visionary men and women who so tirelessly worked to bring the company to this centennial celebration.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of IBM. Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit this Resolution to Senator Jimmy Higdon for delivery.

Page 2 of 2 BR177200.100 - 1772 - 5597 Jacketed
