Response of Hilton Worldwide to the Campaign of Change

Response of Hilton Worldwide to the campaign of Change.org to take action to prevent child sex trafficking

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Hilton Worldwide to respond to a campaign by the End Human Trafficking unit of Change.org to urge the company to take steps to prevent forced child prostitution in their hotels.

Hilton Worldwide sent the following response to Business & Human Rights Resource Centre:

August 10, 2010

Dear Ms. Bauer,

On behalf of Hilton Worldwide, we absolutely and outright condemn all forms of human trafficking and commercial exploitation, including the sexual exploitation of men, women or children.

By way of example, we support the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s position which is as follows:

U.S. laws on the state and federal level make such activity a crime and apply to all businesses and persons within their jurisdiction, including lodging. establishments. Moreover, lodging establishments are often subject to licensing requirements which prohibit the knowing use of their premises for illegal or immoral purposes. All employees are expected to comply and are encouraged to alert the authorities if there is suspected trafficking in their hotel.

At the global level, Hilton Worldwide is supportive of ECPAT and its principles and objectives. All responsible businesses and individuals would support the concept of vigilance in this area. Our soon to be issued Global Code of Conduct will specifically address the exploitation of minors and will be rolled out globally to all Hilton Worldwide team members. In addition, as a founding member of the International Tourism Partnership (http://www.tourismpartnership.org/), we play an active role in shaping our industry’s approach to human rights generally. We are currently exploring other ways in which we can address the issue of human trafficking and exploitation.

I hope the above provides you with information to assure you that Hilton Worldwide takes the issue of the commercial exploitation of any individual for sexual or other commercial purposes extremely seriously.

Yours Respectfully,

Jennifer Silberman Vice President, Corporate Responsibility, Hilton Worldwide

Jennifer L.
